There will be a lot like this until the EFL tighten their checks up from “ are you a fit and proper person”

And just to add insult to injury Steve Dale offers Bury fans lamenting the death of their club this advice

You're probably right, it just feels like Bolton have been in and out of crisis for the last four or five years and keep getting stays of execution.

It's a fairly new stadium at Bolton so I could see that getting sold. I really hope some local can so the necessary to start Burys rise again. A proper club with a proper ground name .

Very much agree with you. They've had a good few winding up orders and several new owners who seem to have acquired through distress, then add more distress or debt on top.

It got me thinking, if it was Barnsley in Bury's situation right now I'd be so desperately sad and angry at the thought of the last 50 years that I've been watching them, thinking that it has all been a total waste of time and money. The history of following my club would be as nought, even though it had happened, and I'd be feeling so lost and empty knowing that my efforts, emotions. joys and despairs were now only in my head as memories, yet the greater picture has now been wiped out due to the failings of individuals and the authorities who could have and should have done more to ensure that my club survived for me to continue to support. Then multiply that by the thousands and thousands of people who have supported Bury down the generations and similar numbers if it had been Barnsley. Two unfashionable clubs who have done their best for their local areas.
It will be interesting to see how they deal with Bolton but you can bet your bottom dollar that they will try their best to wangle them out of the mess they are in. I mean, look at Bolton's history and the players they have had, then look at the stadium and their profile in the footballing world. It's not hard to see that poor little old Bury might have been sacrificed. Come on.... Gigg Lane.... sadly not the greatest venue, but Bury are always going to run second in the survival stakes.
    Very, very sad.

    Thats a really good question.
Bury are no longer part of the football league so does that make them effectively free agents or does the fact that technically Bury were part of the EFL at the time the window closed take precidence?

As Bury still officially exist that could complicate things at the moment but if/when they are liquidated and the players are made redundant I think there has to be a provision i that allows players to move to other clubs. Preventing them signing for anyone else would be illegal as it is taking away their ability to work. Whether such a provision exists though I have no idea.

Football needs to be careful and think long and hard where all this is going.

If the pyramid burns, those at the top will eventually choke. Either that or the whole thing collapses.

Whichever way, more needs to done to protect lower league clubs. That includes those who are facing financial difficulties and those that are adversely affected by other clubs spending money they don’t have.

20-30 years ago clubs mainly had long term owners who understood their responsibility to the wider game and acted accordingly. Now, the majority of club owners are only in it for short term financial gain (ours included) or as a vanity project to get to the glory land of the premier league.

Self regulation is clearly not working so the only way forward I can see is the FA and football league taking a more hands on approach. I’m sure wage caps will come in at some point but because of the clubs’ self interests it will never get voted on until the situation deteriorated to such an extent that there was no other viable option.

the transfer window is still open for leagues 1 and 2 so i assume given they are no longer employed they can sign for whoever wants them.

Seems like Bolton have a strict deadline of 14 days. In their favour, they have fulfilled 4 fixtures, which will lead to less of a fixture pileup to sort out.

My feeling is they are too much of a basket case to save in the long run too, even though they have a bigger name in football.

Very sad for the fans & their small creditors that a solution could not be found for Bury & I hope this does act as a warning to other clubs, that we don't see more go to the wall.

Think Bury only had a remaining squad of 7 players as of yesterday. Stephen Dawson Neil Danns and Harry Bunn being the senior players and the other 4 being under23 lads.

The position with Bolton is very complicated. I had a look at some of the public information aroud six months ago. There are nests of companies involved and much of the land in and around the stadium is the subject of charges which would mean they would fall outwith any assets in an insolvency.

I think thats a really interesting point about the football pyramid. I think as fans (or I can certainly say this personally) we do look at the pyramid and all that history, all those teams and rivalries so close together, all across the country and consider it to be quite special. But do the authorities, owners, and maybe those connected with some of the more deluded but apsirational clubs value it the same?

If there were less clubs, may they perceive more money, less competition, more players to choose, less travel?

I very much agree with you that everything should be done to protect clubs heritage and preserve our league structure.

Looking at all the reported evidence of how poorly run the club was i suggest a fit and proper test be introduced on the EFL and its management.

A cynic would say the ‘big’ clubs wouldn’t be too bothered about the loss of a pyramid as it makes them secure from relegation.
The irony being Gartside was one of those that proposed this some time back

I hope Bolton go under. The only thing that has saved them is fear from the EFL at losing Nat Lofthouse's club.
