Met him up in Ilkley today.

Great stories of the old days, his wrestling career with Brian Glover, being trained at North Gawber Colliery on the laithes by Norman Rimmington. Alan Ogley, Les Lea & a few more. I remember Ogley playing for Stockport versus us a few times in the mid 70's & I think for Darlington too. My dad grew up in Mapplewell, a few doors away from Rimmo's family, Ogley, about 10 years younger than my dad grew up in Darton. Ogley is a legend at County.

Made me think how football has changed so radically from those days.

If you've ever got time, and if it was ok with him, I for one would love to hear some of the stories about wrestling with Brian Glover!

He says Brian was exactly the character in Kes, very ambitious man, but a lovely fella. His dad ran a gym at the Junction that they trained at. My dad was offered to do it full time pro by Brian, but had just got married to my mum, so would only do bouts within 50 miles of Barnsley & pocketed his earnings & got into the hotel trade in Blackpool. The Oyston family were their first landlords & he said Owen was a lovely person back then. He has a very interesting story, as he grew up in one of the poorest households in Barnsley, but was determined not to go work underground. He went to Suez in '56, during his military service. (Was 20 at the time & was in the REME).

Thank's for that, mate! He must have had some talent to even be given the chance to train back then, never mind have the chance to go full time pro. It was a completely closed shop from what I understand and the veterans would kick the **** out of the trainees for months to see how much they wanted to be in the business and see if they were tough enough...

I'll ask my Dad next time I see him, he'll remember the address. I can't call him on the phone to ask, because he's nearly totally deaf. I know it was round Spark Lane / Pie Avenue area, but not even sure if the houses are still there. He was born in '36 & not many of the current houses would be built then. I haven't been down that way for years TBH. My mum & dad have lived on Smithies Lane, since moving back to Barnsley in 1967 from Blackpool.

Growing up at the house on Smithies Lane, I remember my dad pointing out his old house, having walked down over the Willow (Willer). I love going down there when I go back, my old playground as a kid in the early 70's. So much building in Mapplewell on the few times i've passed through now, I find it hard to recognise.

Alan Ogley coached the juniors at Darton Cricket Club when I was there and I played with his son, Mark, who of course went on to play football for Barnsley. Alan was a great fella, always really encouraging and very competitive.
