Short n' sweet is the young lad that sits down with the guy at the end of the advert the guy himself?
I think the most puzzling thing is.........how the chuff have they become a giant in the food industry.
Because Americans are stupid... (generally). In the 1980’s a burger company tried in the US to compete with McDonald’s by introducing the 1/3 lb burger. It was snubbed as Americans bought the similar priced quarter pounder. So A&W did a survey. More than half of the participants in the focus groups questioned the price of our burger. "Why," they asked, "should we pay the same amount for a third of a pound of meat as we do for a quarter-pound of meat at McDonald's? You're overcharging us." Honestly. People thought a third of a pound was less than a quarter of a pound. After all, three is less than four! I guess it’s the same for 1/2lb and 1/4lb...
Would imagine this is it, double 1/4lb must register as more than 1/2lb in people's heads. Not just those who don't understand fractions, it's all researched what registers with us.
I think it’s more that people think they are getting 2 burgers rather than 1/4 looking more than 1/2. It’s like how the big pizza chains advertise pizza sizes in slices even though you could cut the same size pizza into however many slices you want.
Interestingly the vast majority of their money is made in real estate. They’re one of the worlds largest landlords. Which is a despicable business model if you think about it... They build a restaurant and rent it to a franchisee, who then is locked into buying fixed price goods which they can only sell at fixed prices. The only variables are the number of customers (also in the control of McDonalds as they can build another restaurant close by) and labour costs.
