The new bridge looks cracking though doesn't it nudge? 21st century Barnsley at last.

I can see that but closing it would surely mean one less artery from which to escape Oakwell? Roads are always gridlocked at the final whistle so removing one route out would surely make it worse? Anyway, my point was how would this lead to more trains coming through Barnsley rather than the reason for doing it.

Only access traffic had been allowed through the crossing for a long while before it finally closed. ‘Ordinary’ traffic had to turn right and go along Schwabich Gmundt way (sp)

I would have thought it self-evident that if you don't have to close the track to allow pedestrians and vehicles to cross it then you can up the frequency at which trains can run up and down the track.

It's the other way round. The track opened every time a train came through. No worries though @SuperTyke explained the plans to me in more detail and I now understand how it could theoretically lead to more trains coming through.

After God knows how many years, the level crossing has suddenly become so unsafe, that it had to be closed before the bridge was built. The mind boggles.

    At last.
Some common sense being posted about this topic.
Closed before the bridge built ......... but a temporary bridge built that can’t be used on match days.
And on here the surprising thing is ......... some people have actually tried to support Barnsley Councils actions on this.
    Incredible!!!

There are two factors that contribute to the closure of the level crossing. The first is the Level Crossing closure programme. This project highlighted Jumble Lane as one of the most dangerous crossing in the country - not because of the volume of previous accidents, but the level of risk associated with the crossing. Additionally, and as previously advised, the controls for the crossing were being moved to York from April 2019 as part of another Network Rail cost saving programme. Both these factors contributed to Network Rail approaching the council to discuss alternatives and closing the crossing completely.
As the decision had been made to construct a replacement bridge, with agreement from
Network Rail to provide 2m of funding (part of this from the LC closure programme and part from the savings achieved by not moving the controls to York) naturally, Network Rail weren’t willing to keep the crossing open and control locally post March 2019 as well as give the council money towards the bridge.
