They sang one song for Lawrence when he got up having feigned injury. They sang "He's one of our own" for Bennett. I'm sure SOME Derby fans had the decency not to join in, but I'd be fuming if a BFC player in the same situation had even been selected.
I would expect them to play two of their best fully fit players that they have to pay every week regardless, until they have a chance to sell them in January to a club that's not too bothered about morals such as Millwall. They can't sell the fans though when 2k of them are ironically cheering their keeper grabbing the ball and then chanting "he caught the ball" to him. Not the most supportive set of supporters unless it's to their drink driver.
Derby fans all over their official Twitter feed calling Mel Morrris and Cocu a disgrace for allowing them to play.
Yeah, regardless of anything, I’d stand by BFC for not playing our players if they did it, even it meant we struggled. It was alleged on a WhatsApp message that went viral, that they were also under the influence of Cocaine too. No idea If this is true or not though.
I don’t have issues with them playing. What they did was wrong but there’s drink driving cases every weekend with people still going to work & doing there jobs on the Monday. Obviously wrong to sing their names though, really poor of the Derby fans to do that.
The difference for professional footballers is that they are heroes and role models to a lot of people and should set examples. Second, alcohol impairs physical performance and undermines their team. On top of that they seem to have been sufficiently rat-arsed to crash and seriously injure one of their team mates. You can't compare a footballer to an ordinary job.
They are but I find it a bit hypocritical that plenty of footballers get involved in punch ups & play as if nothing has happened yet for drink driving many want them banned from playing
It's almost like a crowd is made up of multiple people with different thoughts, intentions and morals. How odd.
A Barnsley fan aged 20 who had died. Great to see Daniel joining in too. It had been retweeted by some players on Twitter.
Yes your right but I’m sure there will be a lot of Derby supporters who are just as disgusted as this and didn’t cheer it or sing . We’ve some of our own and the red suspenders song gets an airing by a few now and again which I find totally disgusting .
Derby fans have split views, https://dcfcfans.uk/topic/33529-morris-has-bought-shame-on-himself-tonight/
To be a fair, we can’t class all Derby fans as guilty. Also, a few have donated to the Crowd Funding page set up after last night, so like I say, can’t class them all the same. I also know a few who sang last night just to join in. They agree they shouldn’t be playing, but said it was just a way of winding the home fans up - which worked.
Not sure we should have bought Wilks if we're following the moral line - and as he's now are player and under CPS charge - how is that different from the Derby situation?
No, they shouldn't. They're wealthy, fit young blokes with no responsibility to anyone other than themselves. 'Setting an example' implies there is a responsibility that doesn't exist. If I am in love with someone who doesn't want me, it's none of her concern if I'm upset because she's sleeping with people who aren't me, or if I'm worried about how she lives her life, or anything else. Said person is just getting on with her own business, and my feelings are for me to resolve. Likewise with footballers. If I expect them to be role models, it's for me to manage/alter my expectations when one of them turns a sports car into something the size of a sardine can at 100mph.
If I'm honest the Wilkes signing has never sat comfortably with me, especially after the Barton incident. I do think there is a difference when the club itself has issued a statement saying that two players crashed cars under the influence of alcohol, and as a result a player was out for the season. There's an admission of responsibility right there, and yet they appear to be hiding behind some kind of "rehabilitation" angle. As I say, the players involved weren't ill, they were just being idiots. As for Wilkes, he is contesting the charge as far as I know.
