Between Barnsley and Sheffield Utd. October 2016. One club seemed to have had all the world at its feet, while the other could only look on after 5 years of lower League misery. On the latter: Step forward Chris Wilder, and they haven't looked back since. On the former: from Hourihane, Winnall and Hammill/Championship Playoff contenders, with a local lad leading the way.. to abject failure in the running of the club and staring down the barrel of a loaded shotgun, and another odds on relegation in 2 years. How the hell has it happened??
I'd say because of three things. They dropped on Wilder who's a good manager. They have a much bigger fan base so more money to spend. They probably don't live within their means like we do. Not trying to be sarcastic or anything. To me that pretty much sums it up.
I’d be surprised at that. They are hardly flash other than investing their promotion money in the likes of mcburnie (I know to folk on here a club actually reinvesting all its income looks preposterous)
I'm not saying they massively overspend but I do think they regularly make losses. Or did before going up anyway.
So bottom of league dec 2015 ,johnstones paint trophy winners 2016,play off winners 2016.Promotion 2019.20 yrs of exciting times. Some of you dont know what lower league misery is.
All probably true but you forgot a couple more. They have a core of good experienced players. They tend to hang on to their best players and not have a fire sale every transfer window.
LUXURY! When i was a lad, we had to get up at midnight, walk 70 miles barefoot just to make the 3pm KO AND THEN make do with the club being liquidated every Saturday!
They've also had board troubles and uncertainty. They w dropped on by having a fan who us also an excellent manager.
True, but the reason they are more able to recruit and keep those players I think are the ones I stated. For all their extra resources and spending though they're far from immune from chaos and years in the wilderness.
