    Both massive bands in their day, I'm not a massive fan of either, but prefer Simple Minds.

    Still haven't a clue what Jim Kerr is singing.

    Weren't simple minds the first to have a song out?

    They weren’t even close in the opinion of a very biased U2 fan. Obviously this will now warrant ridicule from the majority but since my first album under a blood red sky I was hooked. Seen them many times at home and abroad and loved every show. I don’t mind simple minds by the way seen them once but never got the bug.

    Big U2 fan upto and including Joshua tree, never really got into them after that apart from odd single. Have blood red sky on my running tunes.

    Two bands I have little time for of the two Simple Minds particularly around the time of New Gold Dream have the edge.

    I'm pretty meh about both of them. I like the odd couple of songs from both bands but in general neither really did much for me.

    U2 by a country mile for me. Bought Simple minds Street fighting years on the strength of Belfast Child. ( fantastic single ) Rest of the album bit of a muchness for me. As one of the previous posters mentioned. I watched the concert under a blood red sky on TV. Got me hooked. But personally didn’t take to the Discotheque era. Was glad when they reverted to type. Seen em 4 times. (Even at Bell end rd. grrrrr.) Arguably the best rock band ever.

    Never liked u2. Simple minds were pretty decent. Always thought Bono was a 1st class ****** but just my opinion others might thing different

    I have albums by both of them, mainly the earlier stuff, but its chalk and cheese. U2 had the edge (geddit?) in terms of energy and tempo, but Simple Minds had a richer sound and covered a wider range of styles IMHO, probably helped by having a proper keyboard player, as opposed to that one-finger piano stuff. If you'd asked in the 80s I'd have gone with U2, now I'd go for Simple Minds. "Empires and Dance" and "New Gold Dream" still sound great to me.

    Prefer Simple Minds I liked some of their stuff, U2 not so much, probably too close to the Edge.
