I don't think anyone is disregarding what Redders achieved as a player for us, I'd say it's the total opposite. It's exactly because of what he achieved with us and the status he holds with many fans, including me, that I don't want to see him appointed. I don't want these owners to put him in a situation where he fails, gets booed or berated by the fans before being sacked. If he gets it I'll back him 100% but hearing him getting stick from the Ponty end will be a very bitter pill to swallow. It will for me anyway. I'd rather leave my memories of Redders untainted by the club where he achieved his status in the first place.
Yeah i guess thats understandable, im just of the opinion that there is very little attachment to the club at the moment and little to get excited about so it would just give me personally that hope of a club legend been able to turn things around. It probably is just blind optimism but thats all wev got really.
Completely understandable and part of me would love to see Redders back at Oakwell. It would definitely give us a lift but I fear it would be a short term lift that is likely to go sour sooner rather than later. Worse still is that I'd view the appointment as a cynical move by our owners to try and win some fans back. Redders deserves better than that, a lot better.
Neil RedFearn was a great player for Barnsley FC and played more for us than any club. He has empathy for the club and fans too unlike other names being banded about. Of course a great player for the club is one thing but head coach of the club being where it is at the moment is a big ask. However I would support Neil but hope the board do too . The last thing we want is another Morais type appointment. I was disappointed to say the least when D S 'seperated' from the club and the way it was handled and wouldn't want the same to happen to another popular club legend which DS became in his short time here.
Agreed, rather some stranger from the continent for me. These owners have soured enough good things about Barnsley FC already this season.
I've got to agree with Dyson. I doubt even Jurgen Klopp could get his head around our situation and save us. No-one in their right mind would blame him when we go down. He's got a free hit.
I would be up for him as director of football. Given your comments it seems like you want him to do that role too. Then he can appoint a head coach. I wouldnt want him as HC
If we went for Redfearn it would smack of nothing more than a cheap attempt to appease the fans. He would likely be sacked by this time next year. No thanks.
So will, likely, who ever else comes in. I'd almost appreciate an attempt to appease us after the last 2 months.
Literally playing devil’s advocate, but did Stendel not get to bring his own staff in? He also spoke openly about having his philosophy running through all the different age groups, and how he had to work with Disco on what the press really was. Was like crocodile Dundee - that’s not the press. This is the press. Our Head Coach isn’t some puppet outside of working within a recruitment model. But I know what you’re getting at. I reckon more current bosses fall in to your Head Coach description than the Manager one though.
Didn't Morais bring his own staff in because Hecky took all (Clapham) first team staff with him & we realised they were rubbish so Stendel basically had to get his own in? And I agree about the style point but let's not forget we brought Stendel in specifically because of his ability to play the style the board (which in retrospect sounds barmy) identified. I agree most managers these days aren't the old school type running everything but I do think the remit of ours is much less than other clubs - that's pretty obvious reading between the lines of comments from Johnson/Heckingbottom & Stendel.
As my favourite player I think he'd be great as a no.2. I wouldn't want him as the main man. Too much legend status to damage.
I know what you mean but I would rather we attempted to appoint someone on the basis of their ability as a coach.
I loved watching him play for us but I don't think he's the answer based on his coaching record. What's his football like nowadays though!?
Can't have it both ways though can you? He was either allowed to bring his own team with him or he wasn't, but yes it was a necessity based on the fact we fired the last lot as a whole I think. I don't think it is that different, other than our restrictions on player profile. When things started going wrong at Liverpool, Brendan Rogers was complaining about the recruitment panel. Since Man Utd have started stuttering it's all being aimed at the recruitment team and their lack of a Director of Football (which is why they've been linked with so many appointments). Leicester had a fall from grace and it was pinpointed on losing Carr, but that same recruitment team have assembled a Top Four squad. It happens when the results dry up and turn sour, as you'd expect. Maybe some 'managers' have more input than we allow, but they don't have 100% control of recruitment anymore as there isn't enough time in a day for the level of scouting and recommendation that can be identified through all the tools available these days. As the manager/head coach you have to trust the recruitment team to get you the type of player you want - probably something our team didn't do for Stendel because he wanted experience. He did get four signings though if you believe certain rumours, so 33%.
We have the genuine links in the club already. Devaney U23s Head Coach. Hassell Academy Manager. Tonge Assistant Coach for 1st team. All these have either been overlooked or don’t want it. Redfearn has not done much as a manager, only as a coach for U23s and U18s - when out of the first team limelight. Similar to Adam Murray really. Under the big lights, they both didn’t perform as well. IF Redfearn was to be appointed, he needs to be in by 9am tomorrow, or else we’ve wasted the current break for training. For me, if no one is in by Tues 9am, then they should stick with Murray until the end of the season. This current break is vital out there on the training pitch and other team bonding sessions.
