Got to be thankful that sectarianism is not an issue in this country. Celtic Catholic. Rangers Protestant. What's all that abart.
And if I'm right some other Scottish clubs. Think Arabian Ian might be able confirm that. Posting as such.

Slightly hypocritical of fans calling him out though when most probably weren't wearing one

If it’s ok for him to refuse to wear a poppy, and to turn away when The Last Post is played because its his personal choice then equally it should be ok for those who oppose his stance to express their views by booing him. Now I’m not a catholic but I respect anyone’s right to their faith and therefore would condemn chants about the Pope, as for chants about the ira they are our enemy so fook em.

It's nothing to do with chanting against the IRA. Nobody has a problem with that. The problem is chanting about the IRA to an Irish lad, purely because he's Irish. That's where the bigotry comes in. If you can't see that, you have a blindfold on.

And opposing the Iraq war made you a supporter of Saddam Hussein. Right?

That isn't the problem, it's singing songs about the IRA to McClean because he's Irish.

Not quite the same though is it? If Mclean was an IRA member then maybe... but he's not.

Freedom of speech doesn't allow for verbal abuse. I'm sure you'd rather not have people call you a paedophile/ murderer/ rapist, correct? They are all horrible acts and deserve to be condemned... doesn't mean you are one if I chant it at you though does it?

McClean has made his political beliefs clear, he chose to play for the republic of Ireland side instead of norther ireland where he’s from, whilst playing in America a few years ago for West Brom he turned his back on the union flag and anthem, thus disrespecting us and the country which makes him rich. Each remembrance weekend he refuses to wear a poppy and turned away when the last post was played. It isn't racism because he’s Irish, he clearly has sectarian views which belong in the past, he carries it on to make a political point from an act of remembrance. It’s much like the youths who shout scab at the Forest fans, they like him have been indoctrinated from a young age to perpetuate the hatred against the tories for something that happened 35 years ago. So if he choses to disrespect our flag, our anthem, our remembrance not because he’s irish but because he continues the anti British bias years after bloody sunday and in spite of all the good work done to bring peace in northern ireland, then the fool deserves all he gets.

Does he deserve racial abuse for it?

Where was the racial abuse?? The abuse was against the ira which is political not racist and against the pope which is religious not racist. Why is it only his right to demonstrate his views ?

I should never be surprised that the ones who take most umbrage about being told what they can and can't do, seem most intent on telling others what they should or shouldn't do.

    Also see Brexit.

It becomes racist when you are singing it because of his nationality

I honestly can't see what your problem is with it. You are doing nothing to convince me though that a large majority of leave voters are ignorant, bigoted, xenophobic idiots that see everything in black and white.

If you'd been brought up where he had you wouldn't support the British army either. He has said he'd support it if it were to commemorate the world wars.

So in your book its understandable that the youth of the Ponte end chant scab at folk from Nottingham because their dads taught them to carry in the abuse fir something that happened 35 years ago, so aMcClean carries on the hatred for something that happened before he was born, so the young muslim men and women walking our streets being radicalized are ok to spread their hatred ad infinitum ? So it never ends ?
