bit have you visited parts of the south? I’ll gladly admit, I lived in London for two years and initially hated it. I moved jobs to Sheffield and lived there for 6 years.

I spent much of my time heading to bakewell, Manchester and Leeds.

I’ve lived in London now for 13 years and the platform it gives is unbelievable. I’m insanely lucky I know, today, I’ve spent today walking moments to be in woodland, then to Dulwich park seeing a heron sat in the island on the lake. Then to a couple of pubs, then to have Sunday lunch in nunhead with local butcher sourced meat and local grocer sourced veg. Granted, Yorkshire pudding knowledge is deteriorating at speed, but it was good, then to beer shop in nunhead, chat with owner and into hop burns and black for some stouts and back home.

I can’t do that in Barnsley.

Yeaterday I did a walk round Marylebone and Mayfair and took in highlights like where paul McCartney lived with Jane Asher, where the creator of the national trust lived, where the Profumo affair started and much more. Having a mince pie croissant, mulled wine and a few good beers along the way.

I can’t do that in Barnsley.

If people want to criticise Hull, accept Barnsley has minimal going for it too.

If you want to live there, or more accurately, don’t want to relocate to somewhere you don’t know, crack on, you enjoy.

But people have to accept that Barnsley is unfashionable and untrodden for good reason and there are much better places.

One of the best Town Halls in the country. College buildings are really good. When all the building work is completed, including Nudger's Bridge, it should be pretty decent. I live in Headingley / Meanwood & love where I am, but Leeds has a lot of sh!tholes itself & is an expensive place to live in comparison.

I’ll just pick up on the last bit... My last 5 dialogues with locals I didn’t know in Barnsley have resulted in racist bigoted xenophobic views that I didn’t ask for or welcome.

There are some good people in Barnsley. There are also some vile scummy people there too.

that’s not to say such imbalance is local to Barnsley, but at this time, I’m very content keeping my returns to my home town to a handful and not increasing them.

we’ve discussed this before, and I’d hope Barnsley has at least started to add some quality... though I’ve been unlucky with my choices the last few years when I’ve visited.

There has been a step change in the uk the last few years, but I still think my home town is behind the curve.

Barnsley and South Yorkshire should have some of the best produce in the country, but so much is still volume over quality and I find that very disheartening.

I want to have pride in my home town... but sadly I don’t.

I know London isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I suscribed to that view. But when you go off the beaten track and avoid the crowds, you can find anything, and things you never knew or realised... from where Lord Byron drank, to where the Mayflower set off from, to where band aid was penned and so so much more.

it’s a huge behemoth of a place, and certainly daunting at times... but give yourself time to peel back it’s layers and it’s beautifully accepting of all, warts and foibles included.

There's no bad areas, just scrotes that infest those areas that make them bad.

As I've said I've lived in other parts of the country and obviously there are positives and negatives to wherever you are. I live across from a church that goes back to the 12th century, plenty of history here. Personally I would hate to live in a "fashionanle" place and pay the premium for the privilege. I like a trip to London but would never want to live there. Plenty of nice places to have a coffee and cake in Barnsley too, some dog friendly.

I'm sorry mate, I really am, I agree with you on most things, but that is completely and utterly untrue. Obviously the Marylebone and Mayfair thing isn't possible here, but walking to woodland, going to pubs to eat locally sourced food, seeing herons? Of course we can do that in Barnsley. All over the place.

Barnsley would have a lot more "going for it" if people stopped criticising the place with such obviously out of date and incorrect information. It's got loads going for it.

I do agree with you about vile political views though, but they're not confined to Barnsley, they're all over the country. Sadly.

My locale has certainly gentrified for sure in my 13 years, but I don’t think fashionable registers in my mind at all.

I spend loads of time roaming London, in my edgy bohemian areas in particular, and that’s where you get smiles, conversation and new experiences galore.

my simple standpoint is I couldn’t live the same life if I was imprisoned in my home town. I’d find the best I could get from it, but it would be lesser than what I’m now aware of... and I fully accept there are other places I’d gladly live that aren’t where I live now. Kingston is a fabulous area as an example, but I suspect my next move if not out of the UK, will be Bristol in time.

What the hell are you on about? You and we can do every one of those things in Barnsley or the surrounding areas. We don't live on the moon dude. You need to venture north a little more often before criticising. I'll take you out pal, we'll drink the best black or brown there is and we'll feast on Yorkshire puddings and gravy. You'll be fat and pissed but dead happy.

I was obviously writing my reply to your other post while you were penning that :D

I just don't see how it's fair to compare the best restaurants in Barnsley with the best in London, or, for that matter, with Sheffield or Leeds. I accept you have your opinions and I'm glad you enjoy where you live, but surely you must have something of a soft spot for your home town? After all, you still support our football team. I just can't understand how criticising our town helps. Why not just not say anything? Or balance things with positives? The town won't ever make progress while ever people leave and then go on and on about how bad it is.

Barnsley is situated near 2 cities and as I've stated gorgeous countryside. If I could move the coast a little nearer it would be perfect!

But could you do that in a 4 hour period? Door to door, just on foot?

I respect your views, and I’ll equally defend mine that London will give you more than what Barnsley can provide.

It’s history, culture, diversity, architecture, it’s mix of cuisine and it’s imports to make far away feel local.

ive said many a time that I love craft beer, never have I seen omnipollo, amundsen or pohjala feature on a drinks menu in my native area... but I can get that in multiple places on my doorstep.

I could not live my life to the same degree if I were in Barnsley. If I’d never lived in London, I’d not be aware that was the case.

I think capital cities can certainly offer more experiences if you have money ( I'd love to go to all the West End shows and concerts) but I'd hate not to be able to go for a proper country walk or to see the newborn lambs in the fields in spring.

I think DWLC is winding us northern peasants up. We are obviously of a lower social standing of Dulwich residents who go dancing in the local concrete surroundings of said hamlet.
I think he's the first Barnsley fan who has used the word 'gentrified'. I feel I'm in the company of greatness.

truly, take away my football team (which is happening) and my remaining patent and there is nothing that binds me to my home town.

I guess I come at this from a different angle that I’m just content to tell it like it is and I find it disappointing that others will tar a place through ignorance (a general comment, not aimed at anyone).

My last 4 visits have been disappointing, one of which I cared for my mum for 3 weeks and I felt like I was dieing inside.

I fully accept people can live there and get the most from it, but that’s the same in so many places, north or south, there are fields, farms, forests, food, drink, art, history, architecture, culture, markets, and so much more elsewhere... to merely say Barnsley is the Mecca of humanity (which a handful have alluded to) is frankly disingenuous.

    But you can.

just a few miles along shooters hill is a farm that we visit every year for lambing. And you can be savvy and see shows cheaply too, I’m off to see snowman with the Mrs this week for just £32 for 2 of us.

Of course you could. The only difference being it wouldn't take anywhere near 4 hours. I live in Dodworth, so it's not exactly central, but you don't live in central London either. Woodland would take me about 20 minutes, including the herons. Locally sourced food pub a bit longer, about 25 minutes. In 4 hours if I visited all the fine food pubs round here I'd end up in a right mess, and considerably fatter.

And for the record, London is fine (for me) as a tourist destination, once I get used to the strange looks when I attempt talking to strangers. I just couldn't live there, that's all.
