I’ve lived all over the world and was once of a similar ignorant opinion as DWLC that Barnsley was somewhere I didn’t want to return to.
Fortunately for family reasons I had to return just over a decade ago and have absolutely no regrets.
To suggest that the food and ale here is not up to scratch is plain wrong and proves that the critic is completely out of touch and is unable to see beyond his preconceptions.

it’s fine for your own ignorant opinion to be wrong, I completely accept that.

the food and ale really isn’t up to scratch in Barnsley, but it’s all subjective so I respect your opinion that you sadly think it is.

And what beer can you get from there? Any decent architecture history art or culture?

I love the place - and its people - and it's football club - and coming from a Merthyr Tydfilian that's a complement.

Very happy to have seen my children grow up here into responsible (as far as I know!) adults.
(I think the acid test is - if you're happy with your children growing up somewhere then it's a good place)

One thing I've always wondered is does the place you grow up affect your future character ?

I have to quite regularly travel to London for work and am always happy to leave again. Yes, it has everything you could wish to do there, but it's so stupidly busy at all times you really feel like an insignificant nobody. You can be standing in the middle of thousands upon thousands of people and feel alone.

And to pick up on the pollution point you made, if I can be vulgar about it, every time I go to London, when I get home my snot is black. God knows what it does to people to live with it every day.

If I want culture and all the facilities, I'll visit. I would never want to live there.

I know exactly what you mean, so many people you feel like nobody matters and I always feel like my clothes and hair are soiled by the air. Bit like you used to stink of cigs after a night out even when you didn't smoke yourself. Yes it has all the tourists sites, the west end etc but as you say it’s ok to visit but I wouldnt choose to live there.

We all use an alias on here, as our user name.
But today, sadly, I have worked out that, one of my former favourite posters, DannyWilsonLovechild, is indeed, none other than......

Ladies and gentleman, I give you, Mister....

    HUGH GRANT!!!!

Now keep your pompous views of our town, south of Watford...'****'!!!

I live in Headingley / Meanwood, but my folks & footie mates live in Tarn. If I wasn't in the DJ game I'd happily move back, I'm very proud to be a Barnsley lad (although I was actually born in Blackpool, a long story I won't bore you with). I'd disagree with some folks over Brexit, but I'd have a pint with anyone who supports the club, pro or anti that subject. Life is short & we have more in common than what divides us, when you actually talk to people one to one. I'd say we have more problems with Westminster myself, than someone that lives in a mining town like Bottrop in Germany. An interesting read:

You started by asking if anyone thought Barnsley was a shithole. And appear to want everyone to agree. Then you go on and on about all the places you can visit outside of East Dulwich. Then come out with inane comments about where Lord Byron drank. Really. How many give a toss. The Mayflower set off from Pymouth. Built in Harwich. Band aid wasn't penned . Do they know it’s Christmas was. . I love visiting London and visited dozens of times in my lifetime and you talk as if it's on your doorstep and just over the road. We could all quote places to visit in a certain radius. London 6/7 miles.of you ( the place people work and visit. not live.)
Great to visit theatre. Museums. grandeur. My lad lives in London. Walthamstow to be precise. some great towns to visit. ( never heard of dulwich as one to visit but hey if it’s got owt interesting going for it who am I to argue.)But i would hate to live there myself. This began as a comparison between Barnsley and Hull. Totally pointless to be honest and I don't give a **** , It's a Nationwide football song FFS . But you came on here slagging off Barnsley. Have a look at thissen. you're worse than anybody. Someone called you intelligent. Then you appear an arse.

One day in the future you’ll remember this thread and it will be excruciatingly embarrassing for you.
