Patient data from GP surgeries sold to US companies

In the Guardian, reported by the Observer. I wonder why.......
And the sickest thing (if you'll forgive the pun) is that many working-class people still think the NHS is safe with Johnson.

 

Unless they have permission that sounds like a serious breach of GDPR.

 

I assume its general patient data, not patient details, e.g. number of cancer patients by type of cancer and such like. Obviously they won't be interested in anything that won't turn a profit. The whole thing stinks.

 

I imagine they get round it by claiming it is for vital research

Generic stats for drug development etc. is OK IMO. Selling/providing individual patient data outside of the EU is actually illegal without permission from the individual concerned due to data protection laws so the former is likely to be the case. Click bait headlines, sensationalist journalism as usual and surprise surprise the Labour supporting Guardian and the Lib/Dem Observer readers lap it up.

"Apologising" For what? Data exchange is commonplace (and essential in the modern world, security, commerce, science, industry and finance. As long as it does not compromise individuals privacy what is the issue?

Unfortunately, US pharmaceutical companies aren't known for their kind hearts and respect for fair play with foreigners - so the sensationalism is justified IMO. Anyone accepting the tory lies about a post brexit NHS without massive relationships with the Americans is deluding themselves.

 

That would be breaking the law: i wouldn't even look at patient notes from another ward (even though i occasionally work on them) because i would get into trouble. I'd have serious doubts about the validity of such claims.

 

You can try dressing it up as much as you (Tory media) like. Fact is that they know they cant sell NHS off outright, they have to have a sustained attack, selling it by the backdoor. God knows the Cons know perfectly well how to do dodgy backdoor deals and blame it on someone else, and are the experts in sustained attacks (disabled people).

The article doesn't claim data contains the names of patients. Of course the data is supposed to be anonymised, which as far as anyone knows, it is. However you'd have to be extremely naive to think this has or always will be the case given data breaches across all of society. Here's the actual article given its not been linked yet

The point is IMHO that personal details would add no particular value to this data.

To further add to this...yes, the Guardian is liberal/left of centre leaning BUT that's irrelevant if the journalism is correct. Further, it's also the context of the entire debate surrounding the Conservatives and their plans post-Brexit with the USA. Plus, as the article itself mentions, it's the lack of transparency about the whole thing. Am I suspicious? Too bloody right I am. Do the Tories like to hide documents and deals from the public? Yes they certainly do. The whole thing is worrying.
