Both below us in the form table.... https://thefishy.co.uk/formtable.php?table=2 Win them both and we could be out of the bottom three by next weekend.
Until I had a look on their board, I hadn't realised how much certain so called Hull City fans disliked "us". After reading their distasteful remarks I hope even more now that we turn them over on Wednesday night and drag them well and truly into the relegation dogfight. https://www.not606.com/threads/hull-city-v-barnsley.382154/
That's our traditional name, Tykes seemed to come in ,in the 80s. The Colliers seemed to drop out of fashion in the 1970s, all the industrial action probably didn't help.I prefer Colliers to Tykes but these days no one would know what they are.
You live and learn. To me, we've always just been The Reds. On a related note, outside of media speak, I can honestly say I've never heard anyone call us The Tykes in everyday usage.
Apparently, years ago, Mining and Glass were two of the predominant industries in the Barnsley area. As we know, our Club shirt bears the towns coat of arms, which shows a Glass blower and a Collier, hence the origin of our earlier nickname. Family members on my wife's side also migrated from Staffordshire and Warwickshire to work as quarrymen and stoneworkers in the Barnsley area, as that was another industry that thrived in the area at that time. Members of both our families also came over from Ireland to work in the pits in what we now know as South Yorkshire and the mills in Wigan that we now know resides in the Greater Manchester region. https://www.heraldry-wiki.com/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=Barnsley
