That season Man Utd didn't win a trophy which was unheard of at the time. They made up for it the following season.
I've looked at footage since and although he looked offside when he received the ball he wasnt offside when the ball was played.
I’m, er, not convinced... It looks like the ball is gone but Barnard’s foot is still on the ball at this point
Quite frankly, I couldn't care less. Mike Riley refused to award a blatant penalty at Old Trafford, which would also have resulted in Gary Neville being sent off. I'm convinced if that had happened at the other end in our penalty area, Riley would've given it.
Got to admit I thought we’d lost the chance when mother Riley ignored the shout for a penalty. Even Fergie admitting they’d got away with that one. But it inadvertently gave us one of the greatest nights ever. Riley should have been hauled over the coals by the fa over that non decision. Only person in the entire ground who thought it wasn’t a penalty.
Mike Riley ought to have been kicked out football long before that day and certainly should never been allowed anywhere near Old Trafford, yet he seemed to get the majority of Utd home games
Fantastic night and a brilliant header from Scott Jones right in front of us in the Ponty end for the winner. I’ve never forgotten Peter Schmeichel’s gesture on full time when he turned briefly and applauded the support in the Ponte. Nice touch of quality that from a great keeper.
What an incredible night. Absolutely loved going into school the next day & giving it to all the Man Utd supporting glory hunters
Missed that match, working in some Manchester city centre office block, remember bloke who I was working with commented on the way to Manchester via Woodhead that Woodhead Res would be full Man U fans that will have thrown themselves in going back home after the match.
I fully expected Riley to back heel an equaliser for Man Utd in the 98th minute. I'm sure I've read somewhere that Riley is a Man Utd fan and as such shouldn't have refereed the game anyway.
The commentators said as much on the Big Match ITV highlights that night. The Hendrie goal was equally bent as it supplied the officials chance to even things up. Which they duly took.
