    It's often a begrudged afterthought.

Sorry mate it is 100% wrong. Don't forget we actually live here so I don't know why you are contradicting me.

Don't know who put the entry on Wiki but it is often full of in-accuracies this being one. There WERE various levels of 'ramping up' and more restrictions were imposed on the 9th but not the full lockdown restrictions we now have.
They were only announced by Conte on Wednesday night (11th) on TV in a televised address which we missed as we were watching a film on Netflix. and started on Thursday 12th at 1 minute past midnight. The first we knew was when my daughter posted to us on messenger around 11pm so we put the TV on and all the Italian news channels were full of it followed by a flurry of posts on Whatsapp from our Italian friends group.

It's a small sample size, but the medical professional I spoke to also referred to the gender discrepancy: men are at least twice more likely to die from it than women.

Easy tiger. I was just relating what I thought I remembered the Wikipedia article said, which was correct and in fairness is linked to a BBC and Wall Street Journal report. However it it would appear that this didn't include bars and restaurants which were subsequently closed on the 11th and then factories and non essential production on the 22nd March, as per this timeline:

    Timeline:

    • Jan. 31: Italy suspends flights to China and declares a national emergency after two cases are confirmed in Rome (2 confirmed cases).
    • Feb. 20: A man in Lombardy tests positive after previously leaving the hospital without a test. He is believed to have spread the disease widely before developing severe symptoms (3 cases).
    • Feb. 23: Small towns hit by the outbreak are placed under quarantine. Carnival celebrations and some soccer matches are canceled (150 cases).
    • March 4: Schools and universities are closed (3,089 cases).
    • March 8: Several northern provinces are placed under lockdown (7,375 cases).
    • March 9: The lockdown is extended nationwide (9,172 cases).
    • March 11: All restaurants and bars are closed (12,462 cases).
    • March 22: Factories are closed and all nonessential production is halted (59,138 cases).

    Well, that's ironic. :D

    Stay safe :)

Looks like it has peaked/levelled off. You'd probably expect to see this start to fall at some point in the next 7 days or so.

You’ve mentioned the BBC. His blood pressure has just sky rocketed.

    OK Apologies....
I see where you are coming from ( Incidentally the 11th is when the total lockdown was announced - It only came into force on the 12th hence the confusion - not that 1 day makes that much difference). So, when calculating the length of time full lockdown has been in force for determining its effectiveness on reducing the spread and rate of infection it has only really been 19 days). The other lockdowns were a bit like a phoney war as most people could move around and separation was not always being properly observed .

We considered the true lockdown...ahem.... 'experience' was when we could no longer ....

Leave the comune (albeit with strict separation) to travel to a supermarket of choice or go for a meal to a bar or restaurant.
All non essential shops/malls were ordered to close
Only one person in car allowed - no passengers (nor even spouse) - Guess who has to do the shopping and get shouted at if I dont get all the stuff on the list!!!
GO to any place other than nearest supermarket( for food essentials only) so that rules out major supermarkets and places like Lidl for us (the only place we could get certain items WE consider essential but not according to the rules)
Exercise and other actvities e.g. walking a dog must be carried out close to the house. We dont have a dog just and independent cat who flouts the rules constantly:)

All parks, cemeteries churches etc. now closed. academic anyway as we cant get to them without leaving comune

So......as an 'experience', Lockdown only felt like a lockdown from the 12th onwards for us and all the people we know. Prior to the 12th you could see and hear traffic. Now even though essential workers are allowed to travel all we hear most of the time are birds, distant barking of dogs, the odd cockerel and ...oh! the flock of sheep that have been let loose on the fields a few hundred metres from ou house. Very rural. We dont even see vapour trails from planes as nothing much is flying now.
We are lucky as we have lots of space but feel for people couped up in apartment blocks in the towns and cities. I suspect it feels the same for people in the UK now as restrictions really are beginning to bite.

    Stay safe!!

I doubt it's anything to do with oestrogen as the age range of women who are not dying when their male counterparts are will have gone through the menopause and as such will not have high levels of the hormone.

There may be a correlation between old men who are married and the death rate as married men of many years have probably lost the will to live!
