This is also a mind bending read about the Beach Boys. Manson family & lots of weirdness for a supposedly clean living USA band. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Heroes-Villains-True-Story-Beach/dp/0306806479
I’ve got it. Steering through the buying of books is a pain in the ass but the service itself is fine. Listening to the latest Hilary Mantel and thoroughly enjoying it.
bernard cornwell ( he wrote sharpe/ last kingdom) but the king arthur trilogy are good escapism and if derfel cadarn isnt sean bean i'll show my backside on the townhall steps. i chalk richard e grant in as lancelot just for the sneer
I was there eight years from 1980 to 1988 building the MTR, doubling and electrifying the KCR and project manager on the Tsuen Mun to Yuen Long LRT. Oh, and played for HKFC. Why don't I know you ?

Can anyone remember the little Observer Books, well in while at school in 1959/60 I won a book for being the Ink monitor and received an Observer Book the No 5. wild animals and ever since then I have collected them there are 98 in the series at the moment I have 36 first editions and 58 in total all with dust jackets, and still collecting they are not very dear around £5 some rare ones around £10.
My son gave me a book he got from a 2nd hand book shop, written 20 years ago. "The Prodigal Spy" by Joseph Kanon. He said it was one of the best spy novels he's read. I read it and I thought the same. Never heard of Joseph Kanon.
I played most of my time in HKFC first team, the only amateurs in the professional leagues. When I retired to the social teams at 37 we played beer games against the forces teams, the Ghurkas, and the residents at Stanley Fort, the Cheshires and the Scot's Guards. I was in Wanchai on the last night before the Scot's Guards were to be repatriated. It coincided with 2000 US sailors on shore leave from the carrier USS Ranger. It's the only time there was 200 (the full contingent) of Gweilo cops in riot gear on the streets of HK, since the cultural revolution, to break up the brawls and pitched battles. There were more casualties amongst the Yanks and the cops than the Scots. Happy days.
Try the Margaret Atwood trio Oryx and Krake, the year of the flood and MadAdam. Very good dystopian story.
we flew out to uss coral sea 81/82 ish on her farewell tour, and then took some of the guys out, the local bars were charging $us but when we went to the bar it was hk$ so we told the yanks we were getting a better deal as we were "local" and split the difference with the bar owner, drunk and a profit. . . . good squaddie
Hilary Mantel completely defeated me - her books so well researched and intense I felt I was trying to read a history text book.
Loved the sadly deceased Philip Kerr and Bernie Gunther, my favourite anti-hero. Other authors I would recommend to get you through lockdown: James Ellroy Raymond Chandler Dashiel Hammet Brett Easton Ellis David Peace Stieg Larsson
I'm borrowing ebooks from Rotherham Library at the moment. They've had most of the titles I've searched for so far.
if you like a good Scottish crime series you cannot beat Stuart MacBride's series about Logan McRae. they are excellent stories and in places laugh out loud funny
