Was any of our number on the special to Reading in the 78-9 promotion season. I went with a load of lads from school and I distinctly remember the fare was £5. When you consider admission was around 40p and a programme 10p that was a lot of dough. Another thing thats stuck with me was an attack after the game by a group of Reading hooligans. We'd been escorted to this railway halt in a high prominent place and were crowded on the single platform waiting for the special to pull in. All of a sudden a gang entered into the marshalling yard below and started throwing what ever they could in our direction. Echoing the words of one of General Custers Captains when encoutering attaching Indians, a Woman PC close by shouted "Dont worry boys, they cant possibly hit us from...." and before she finished the sentance a lump of rock clattered into the metalic sign above her head. This was the cue for everyone to jump down onto the track (we were a sitting target) and throw whatever we could back in their direction. "Get off the track" the PC shouted " The trains coming"....It wasnt, but it could have been but that wasnt the immediate problem. After a minute of exchanging missiles the rest of Custers army turned up in the marshalling yard and made a few arrests.
Last year, in the online offering from the British Newspaper Archives, the Reading papers from the time were uploaded so I scanned them mainly for the match report but then came across a description of the incident and the subsequent court case that ensued. One of the throwers was jailed for 9 months and in mitigation said he had been set upon in Barnsley at the earlier fixture and was looking for revenge......funny what you remember isnt it.
