Incidentally, the headline argument for not opening schools seems to be that the risk to children is halved if schools are reopened two weeks late. However, what all of the headlines seemingly omit is that independent SAGE has estimated that the risk to children dying if they go back on 1 June is 0.000023%, whereas 0.0000011% if they go back 2 weeks later. So whilst half the risk sounds a lot, when the risk is already so low, does it warrant loss of further education?
you have to factor in that children may pass on the virus to other family members (older?) either directly or from their clothes. there is also the risk to school staff to be considered.
Ive had one to one supervisions with Sir David King. Nothing to do with the thread, I just wanted to boast.
Agreed, but disappointingly, independent SAGE haven't quantified this risk. They've just said its something that we need to consider which is quite obvious. I was expecting much more from what was supposed to be a rival to the real SAGE. I'm not sure how they can claim that its not safe to open schools on 1 June based on the very limited analysis they've undertaken thus far. Not only that, but they claim such evidence is "clear". What evidence?
For those that want to read the report: http://www.independentsage.org/wp-c.../Independent-Sage-Brief-Report-on-Schools.pdf
Opinion should be based on empirical evidence. What we have is so called 'evidence' based on opinion. The Government says it's following the science - that would be fine but do the scientists know what they're doing. And no one seems to be honest enough to say 'We don't know' - We now have this Test-Track-Trace scheme - it will only work if results of the testing are done soon after the test - and everyone (even the over 60's!) has a mobile phone that messages can be passed on to.
i personally don't see the point in returning for 3 weeks, then finishing again. no one has been able to explain the benefits of doing it. my boy will be returning in september.
This is the way the wife and I see it. The correspondence we’re received receiving from our daughter’s school to us seems to point to an increase in child care for them rather than learning. No criticism for the school from us, they’re just being honest
I actually see some benefit in getting the kids used to the routine of getting up and ready for school and concentrating within a school environment again but obviously only if it is safe to do so
Ditto. Our school have been less then complimentary about the guidelines they’ve received. Almost to the point of discouraging parents from returning. I feel for the teachers. They’re working twice as hard as they did before, as far as I can see.
I did say ‘personally’. It wasn’t a comment or judgment on anyone else. I totally understand why it might be the right thing for others. Just not us.
