I was speaking with my nephew, a doctor in a midlands hospital, on 'Facetime' last week. The senior staff have been told by the hospital trust to make contingency plans for a 'likely second wave of the virus by the end of June. He says that he doesn't know whether this is just provisional good practice and common sense or they know something else. I hope it's the former.
its bound to happen, since the PM slightly eased lockdown measures most people I have seen have totally stopped following social distancing measures. When they lift lockdown fully we will see so many people out and about in pubs, shops etc. making up for lost time and will most certainly lead to a huge second wave IMO.
That will be to do with the lag period once lockdown is lifted. Another wave is expected during the winter period too, during the usual cold flu season.
The end of June is a result of this week and next. if my street is typical of the country (30’s semis - could be the opening credits of any movie and you’d think ‘England’), lockdown is finished. Almost every house has had visitors over the weekend.
I would think because we were so slow in dealing with this at the start, that it's better to now have plans in place just incase so it doesn't come at you unexpected, if it indeed does arrive. A bit like the temporary hospitals they got going that were thankfully not needed, but at least they were there for the worst case scenario. We have track and trace now anyway which Hancock thinks is a laughing matter.....
You could argue that we don't really have any choice about easing the restrictions. The country, and the rest of the world, needs to be functioning again soon so what else can the authorities do but allow more freedoms? If that results in more infection then this will be dealt with accordingly. This Nightingale hospital project seems to have slipped into the background. Millions spent on equipping these facilities with very few, if any, admissions to the new beds. I presume they are still there and can be activated quickly so I would hope that the health services could cope with any further spike in Covid cases.
All govt ministers are now laughing at us, because they have still got their leader running things, that is, Cummings, they really don't give two hoots about us plebs...
As was said at the time, the Nightingale hospitals would have been a great idea if we could shake the "magic doctors and nurses" tree and suddenly find the people to staff it. Adding 10,000 extra NHS beds is great, finding the thousands of staff required to run the beds is a lot harder.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...England-Wales-Figures-88-000-people-died.html April was our deadliest ever month so we better hope a second wave doesn't arrive as it will be a huge set back.
As far as I know the one here in Harrogate at the International Conference Centre has never been used (apologies if my information is wrong). The staff that were allocated to it were released "back to their normal duties" some weeks ago. It just seemed crazy to me to open all these "field hospitals", just in case they might be needed. What is even more crazy is that we used to have a network of fantastically-run military hospitals all over the country which were shut down/bulldozed as surplus to requirements. Try telling that to the people of Swindon who used the PARAF Hospital at nearby Wroughton on a regular basis. Being ex-RAF I was in there myself on a couple of occasions for very minor things. I remember the acres of gleaming floors (even the public link corridors) and the highly trained, top professional medical staff that were stationed there. The hospital was closed in 1996 and no longer exists. The whole of the RAF Medical Services was decimated years ago. The end of the Cold War led to short-term thinking and poor decisions were made. Even with the wider military draw-down that became necessary the hospitals of all three services should have remained open, even if they would be more for the benefit of local civilians than Service personnel.
Must be different where you are then, but round near me (worksop way) a lot of folk just acting like nothing is happening. I went shopping the other day to local Aldi for my weekly shop and the lack of distancing by most shoppers was a joke. There is a large country park near me too which had the car park gates locked before the PMs update, since then those have been reopened and the car park has been rammed every time I have gone that way while walking the dog. Seen remnants of BBQs and crates of booze up there lately too so some are going there for parties too it seems.
These field hospitals were built to support either a second wave or herd immunity programmes. Lockdown has meant that they have been redundant. Doncaster and Barnsley have both seen a large spike in covid hospitalisations over the last week and a spike in people put on ventilators. Be interesting to watch the next 3 weeks to see what the output is after easing of lockdown, Cummingsgate, VE Day, The Bank Holidays and packed beaches.
Makes it more puzzling why the elderly in care homes were just left to die and persons showing symptoms just chucked into them to cause mayhem. They could have utosed these nightingale hospitals that were not being used.
I'm just in my own bubble right now. I wash my hands and sanitise whilst I'm at work. However, I haven't been wearing gloves or anything on public transport. Just a face mask occasionally. However, it isn't as bad as I expected because a lot of people are still on furlough. I think the people to avoid are those on furlough that have been totally oblivious to social distancing measures. I see an attitude creeping in down to the dropping numbers that if I'm going to be struck down it would have happened by now. I think the key is keeping your personal variables the same and avoiding people you haven't been in contact with. Even something as simple as using the Hospital shuttle bus. Wear a mask if you see a doctor or nurse you haven't travelled with before. Thing that's annoying me most is people wearing masks outdoors when there is nobody around them and on their own in cars? I had to educate someone at work that the life of a face mask is 23 mins. Yet people are wearing them all day and re-using them.
Too slow. No material changes again. ‘Schools to reopen’. Yeah, but they’re not though, are they? Fiddling while Rome burns. This Government is responsible for the millions of unemployment that will follow.
No it won't and no it isn't. This is just an estimate for cancer deaths because millions have been forgotten about.... Add to that deaths from other things that couldn't be diagnosed sooner and way more people are going to die because of Covid not from Covid.
^ for anyone that the above poster hasn’t raised the eyebrows of with incessant posts of daily mail articles, guido fawkes headlines and Karol Sikora posts. If you are wondering why this doctor has spent the whole pandemic underplaying the danger and encouraging lockdown to be lifted: Sikora is the Medical Director of private health firm Proton Partners Ltd, based in the tax haven of the Bahamas. He took part in a series of anti-NHS attack ads for the US Republican Party aimed at killing off President Obama’s healthcare plans. He described the NHS as ‘the last bastion of communism’. He wants to see its end and introduction of private healthcare. Does him constantly selling comforting lies about the safety of lifting the lockdown to overwhelm the NHS start to add up yet?? Just a heads up as lots seem to not realise the lobbying this man is getting away with.
