There are a few posters on here that were generally against the initial lockdown when many, including myself, felt it should have been brought in earlier and with more strict measures. For those that disagreed, what are your thoughts on the easing process we’re now going through?

This is a genuine question and isn’t a dig at anyone with different views, we will never agree on those so there’s no point continuing that debate. This thread is asking about easing lockdown.

In my opinion we are easing too soon with deaths still in the hundreds and infections estimated at around 8k per day. I’m comfortable with having more people in gardens and general outdoor spaces (although I’d like to see limits on amounts of people in parks, beaches etc), but definitely not with the number of shops that are going to open in the next couple of weeks and schools which I think should remain closed.

    Interested to hear other thoughts.

In my opinion it's too soon. Yes there is a trade off between public health and the economy but as said by OP the death rate still looks alarming. In effect the Government are easing restrictions KNOWING FULL WELL that there will be an increase in the death rate. Therefore the Government are actually encouraging people to go out and die. A bit stark said like that but hey ho!
p.s. The shouting was for all Nudger followers

A general easing is needed, small groups of people meeting in open spaces I’m absolutely all for. Large gatherings, schools and shops not so.

I note the government are no longer “following the science” as the science doesn’t quite fit the agenda anymore.

I felt, and said at the time that there should have been a more timely response, but I was against the lockdown in terms of it encompassing near enough everyone. Protect the vulnerable, introduce some measures that limited the spread in key areas, weak spots.

However, we locked down (although it's been less strict than most countries).

And I now think the easing of restrictions has come too soon, based on all available science/data.

So there you go. Was against it, but would rather have given it more time before lifting it.

I'm with you mate. I admit to initially underestimating the scale of the problem, mainly because I thought our health system would be able to cope with almost anything thrown at it. I had clearly not seen the way that the NHS had been run down over the last 10 years.

I still think the lockdown is completely pointless as a 75 year old COPD sufferer is legally allowed to visit a shop every day for his newspaper but a 21 year old athlete isn't allowed to hug his niece.

Historically people with differing risks have been governed by different laws (a 12 year old can't drive a car for example) but when it comes to this life or death situation where every statistic out there tells you that certain groups are a much much higher risk than other groups where the risk is tiny and the message could not be clearer. Everyone will have the same rules thrust upon them regardless.

Its pointless and me not doing something won't stop Arthur who worked darn the pit 60 years ago from dying wheb he's allowed his daily walks, his shopping trips etc

**** stay home, protect the nhs, save lives. **** stay alert, control the virus, save lives.
The message should be isolate the vulnerable, give them support, save lives.

So from the position we are in, would you be happy to reset life back to pre-COVID days with the exception of making the vulnerable isolate.

Did you get any replies from those who were originally against the lockdown?

Almost. I would still ban mass gatherings in confined spaces such as football grounds where close contact cannot be avoided and would force all shops, pubs and restaurants to make alterations. Spacing aisles wider, a reduction in table numbers, screens between tables or disposable seat coverings for example

Anyone over 60 or at high risk should be looked after. Anyone younger who's healthy should be given way more freedom and treated differently, but keep social distancing in place.

I believe Whitey and SuperTyke we’re both generally against the initial lockdown, at least in the form it was implemented.

Presumably you’d keep the 2m stuff going in asda and workplaces etc?

I'd reduce it from 2 to 1 (as per the WHO advice) but I'd enforce it much more strictly. Supermarkets who wish to open would be forced to have ways of managing it that aren't just stickers. For example they would have to create a designated queuing area that isn't down an aisle

My question is about the number of new daily infections. All the official news reports are stating approx 2k new cases a day but a figure of 8k a day keeps getting stated.
There’s a massive difference between 2 and 8k, just where is the higher figure coming from?

I think it’s an extrapolation based on the high proportion of people who catch Covid that don’t actually get diagnosed because of a combination of access to testing or now more frequently because they are asymptomatic/suffer from very minor symptoms.
