I think the problem for Wakefield per se, is that it's made up of five towns, three of which re- Castleford, Featherstone and Wakefield are all predominantly egg chasing areas. From my time as a part time Youth Worker, my perception was that Castleford and Featherstone had quite a number of Leeds United fans, with areas like Normanton and Ryhill having it's fair share of Reds fans, as did / does Ossett with a sprinkling of Huddersfield Town and Leeds United supporters as well.
"Oh aye" became a popular colloquial term in Barnsley because, in the area of Jump (formerly known as Elsebus), visitors would always hear the local women shout JUMP, followed by a distant, male, meek voice asking - in archaic dialect - "how high?" So the humourous nickname "Jump" stuck, as when anyone asked where you were from and you said Jump, the other person would mockingly reply, "oh, aye"
Legend has it (Being from there originally) . So we were told as young uns. There was a stream between Hoyland and Wombwell and you had to JUMP Over it, ( Jump ending up being a parish of wombwell) to get from one to the other. I’ve never seen or heard owt to contradict it. One legendary article says people jumped over it to get to work. From where and to ?. I can only assume it refers to the above.
and the furthest point in England and Wales from any Football League Ground is Aberdaron on the Lleyn Peninsula -- I think!
Sunderland has the same postcode as Newcastle - so could eb counted - but Bradford has a different postcode to Leeds - so can't (imho)
Barnsley has the same postcode as Sheffield - does that mean that Barnsley and Rotherham are part of Sheffield? It also make Grimsby part of Doncaster... Oh, and Sunderland is SR, Newcastle is NE, so not the same postcode at all
you are right, my bad. I have a mate who is a Sunderland fan and his postcode is NE, but he doesn't live in Newcastle, he lives in South Shields. It's all his fault
Its only 16 miles from Pwlheli and not much further to Caenarfon (34) or Bangor (42). You didn't specify *which* football league. It is 89 miles from Wrexham or the nearest top 4 leagues is Shrewsbury or Tranmere at 104-106 miles Great Yarmouth is 20miles from Norwich. Skeggy is ~40 to Grimsby or Lincoln. Berwick is 63 from Newcastle. Penzance is 76 from Plymouth
