Got to be Mido. All the attention and buzz around his signing. His history of clubs. His reputation. And of course, his fitness. It would’ve been great to see an actual fit Mido and see what he could’ve done for us. Still, we’ll always remember that exercise bike in the dugout.
Problem with Hristov, is that by the time he settled into the country and the club, he suffered a big knee injury, which kept him out for several months. His 3rd season, which was under Bassett was all about getting back into playing again. Trouble was then, he had some established quality players in front of him. He had plenty of skill and technique, just needed time to adapt. He then went to Holland after leaving us, and banged in 18 goals - yes, lower standard, but you’ve still got to score them. You don’t score 18 goals for Partizan Belgrade and 21 for Macedonia if you’re rubbish. It was all about settlement and adaptation for him and the other foreign lads at the time. I think in 2020, with what clubs know and how they handle the foreign lads integration, he would have faired much better and quicker too.
Miguel Mostto. Another lad who struggled to adapt but had the skill. Suffered issues with his son being ill back in Peru too if I remember?
I thought that but wasn’t 100% sure. He had his limitations, but which Barnsley player doesn’t? Perkins was always grafting, harassing the opposition and nipping in to intercept.
Haha I reckon so - I can only vaguely remember Corbo but he was a favourite of mine too! Though I was pretty young, so I might've just thought he has a cool name...
I think any player who brought some continental flair was always an instant favourite of main. Loved a luxury player who probably wasn't very good but could pull a ball down from 60 yards, flick it on, or play a killer pass.
I had no idea Mateo Corbo came back to England to play a dozen or so games for Oxford United three years after leaving us ......
Paddy McCourt for me. Let's he honest, outside of a few ridiculous goals for us he was shiite. No work ethic, went missing in a lot of games, so unprofessional. But I loved him.
I felt very sorry for Georgi. He really struggled to adapt to life in Barnsley and struggled with the language. But he definitely had goals in him and I think without the injuries he'd have fulfilled the potential Danny saw in him.
Graham Felton. I never viewed him as a flop until I read a few posts on here about him a few months ago. To me, he was an excellent winger for us, who brought balance to our team. A team that were bottom of the entire Football League and having been embarrassingly knocked out of the FA Cup by Marine, just before he signed on loan for us. After he joined, we went on a decent run, finishing in 12th position at the end of the season. In my opinion, that run was due in no short way to Felton's signing and performances. To others, it appeared they thought we'd progressed in spite of his signing.
I thought Thiam would be great for us. His skills were a joy to watch. I defended him to the hilt until he seemed to lose complete interest. Partly down to the way I think he felt mistreated. Players chosen ahead who couldn’t lace his boots.
Mark Stallard, was made up when we signed him, lower league Poundland Mark Hughes. Just didn't bring his shooting boots, always tried though. Honourable mention to Big Bazza Conlon, never seen a swede that big.
Michael Boulding rattled the goals in for Grimsby I thought we got a right deal swapping him for Rankin. Too casual in front of goal. He scored about 12 during the 2004/5 season and should have had 24. That team massively underachieved.
