What about ‘doubling the minimum sentence’ though. I don’t think she said much towards answering the question really, she said she’d suffered racial abuse, which is disgusting of course, but I don’t think that was the main point of the question. Words are meaningless without something to back them.

In my experience Barnsley has quite a few racists but quite a few is still the minority. I think there are two different levels of racist in barnsley. The out and out racists who say and think the most awful things and then the racists who don't have a problem with actual dark skinned black people such as Bambi, mvoto etc but DO have a problem with and will blame everything on your much more recent immigrants. Where colour of skin isn't the issue but nationality is.

It's also my experience though, and I think this is key, that a similar proportion of people appear to be racist in Rotherham, Sheffield and Donny so I definitely think it's unfair to call barnsley racist town. Yes we have racists but so does every town. You won't find a single one in the UK without racists. The difference is that the media knows if it interviews a racist from barnsley it makes for good TV. The town looks dull and dreary most of the time because of the lovely northern weather. Quite a lot of our townsfolk are a bit lacking in style. They've got the typical 'thick' accent. Put all that together with racist views and it's excellent viewing for the TV. It's no coincidence that we have a lot more racist or extremely anti immigration Barnsley folk interviewed for TV than there are interviewed and quoted in newspapers where they have lost the look and sound of a typical barnsley person and instead have to rely on the words to sell papers. Suddenly they realise that they can get their racist views from someone down south instead and the paper will still sell.

Bit of a giveaway! I guess she is an immigrant in your eyes because she is of Asian descent. She isn’t an immigrant by the way.

There's a distinct vile underbelly of Barnsley. Look no further than Kendray. It was my second home a few years ago, a lot of folk there still live in the Stone Age

I thought she answered the question really well. She was asked if she understood racism and responded by saying she did - having a Home Secretary who has actually experienced racism all her life is probably a good thing. Much of the racism in this country is casual and she knows exactly what that is as well as anybody.

The way I understood her comment was that she meant that the sentence available to courts when somebody is convicted had been increased. To be honest if the only criticism of the whole speech was this bit then I think people are looking for fault and being a little bit petty. Any increase in sentence for people who assault emergency workers must be welcomed. I'm not a legal expert so I don't know if there are minimum sentencing guidelines if somebody is convicted.

I don't know if she is or not. I don't care if she is or not. I understand that her parents emigrated from India to Uganda then came here in the 70s. I should probably have said 2nd generation or child of immigrants, but I don't actually care about her background.

I do care about her right-wing authoritarian views, I do care that she is removing freedom of movement. I do care that she was late to implement quarantines (although rumours suggest that she was overruled from above). I do care that she voted against same-sex marriage. I do care that she voted against banning the detention of pregnant women. I do care that she committed treason with the government of Israel and was brought back into the cabinet afterwards. I do care that since she was Home Secretary she has broke the ministerial code by consulting for a 3rd company without approval. I do care that she voted in support of the measures that lead to the Windrush deportations.

Luckily, this Government allows us to prove this by having an incompetent white male at the top of the tree.

With you on all your rant above except the voted against banning the detention of pregnant women. - What was that maybe I miss something but I dont think being up the duff should protect you if you commit a crime. ( I can see it could be taken into consideration to some extent but surely it isnt a get out of jail card)

I wouldn't support a pregnant woman getting off with a crime because she is pregnant. I would potentially support delaying (or commuting) the punishment while she is pregnant. Prison isn't the place to receive the medical or emotional help a woman needs while pregnant. So she could still pay a fine, do community service, etc but maybe instead of prison she has to undergo house arrest, or the sentence is delayed/suspended for a period of time. There is also the possibility that her hormones caused/changed her behaviour and affected her decision making capabilities at the time of the incident. I wouldn't support putting a pregnant woman into remand unless it was a violent crime.

Obviously wouldn't work for violent crimes, but "minor" offences such as shoplifting it could be taken into consideration.

It was clearly a slip of the tongue - though she ought to have realised the importance of what she’d said.

for clarity - there is no current minimum sentence, so she probably intends to set one (doubling zero makes no sense).

In other news though, people should do some research into the Ugandan Asians we welcomed in the 70’s, why they needed our protection. I saw a documentary last year - it was a revelation.

I think this was being looked in the same context as Diane Abbott was judged, particularly, the time when she was clearly ill, but that didn’t stop the onslaught, particularly the Tories on this Forum. An understanding of what she she said or even meant doesn’t always mean the same thing. Priti Patel is a bullying, careerist horrible politician, she’ll go far in this cabinet
