Can anyone explain the logic of this to me If I understand this right - the UK has one of the worst Corona rates in the world and the second worst in Europe but we are forcing quarantine on all arrivals from countries with much better corona control than ourselves. Not only that its a fairly draconian quarantine with being confined to one room in a house if possible and no exercise allowed and no option to clear yourself by having a test. But you can take the tube to get home in the first instance I genuinely don't understand what this is trying to achieve other than wreck still further whats left of our travel industry
Makes no sense, it's anti business, anti immigration, anti travel, a total mess. The big question is though, why would anyone want to come here, we're still the sick man of Europe?
New Zealand doesn't have a Covid case but their people would have to quarantine for a month if they visited us (fortnight here and again when they go home). It's madness.
There was little point introducing this so late in the process. It won't be in place long. To save face though I can see a further 2 week extension before it's dropped.
27 people have died in total in my département here, La Nièvre, but none in the last week and only 3 in the last month. 12 people are currently hospitalised of whom 1 is in intensive care. That's in an area roughly 4.5 times the size of South Yorkshire. Clearly my imminent arrival in a county (Northamptonshire) that's still recording over 30 deaths a week poses a serious threat to public health.
Is it to protect us? Or is it so that when the EU countries introduce travel bans on the UK they can say they're doing the same? IIRC It also doesn't apply to frequent travelers - so someone could take one flight from France and be quarantined, but someone else could take the same flight every week and not be quarantined.
So for 10 weeks we have allowed unrestricted travel on flights, ferries and trains into the UK, from anywhere including China whilst the pandemic raged and tens of thousands died. Now the government are trumpeting the fall in infections, the huge increase in testing (which has put the Post Office under immense pressure ), the fall in the death rate, the low "R" value, the easing of lockdown Lite, the "travel anywhere in England" rule and the potential opening of pubs from June 22nd, and the lowest daily death total for months Priti Vacant then has a brainwave. "Your Highness Boris, I've just had a great idea, now we've had such great success, let's force every traveller into quarantine from now on and destroy the airline industry" "Oh, except the Southern Irish" And those from the Isle of Man, for no real reason" Boris: "Great idea PV, what are the rules? PV: "Once at their destination they must not use public transport or taxis. They must not go to work, school, or public areas, or have visitors except for essential support. They are also not allowed to go out to buy food, or other essentials, where they can rely on others." Boris: "What if they can't rely on others? Not everyone has 7 kids to help like I do" "Or is it 6....hmmm" PV: "Well if they can't rely on others then they can jump in a taxi or catch a bus and go anywhere they like to buy food or essentials like fence paint" Boris: "Sounds good to me...implement it immediately and don't put through any phone calls from that O'Leary bloke"
Would have made absolute sense in February not so sure about now. I get that a robust approach helps but it would make more sense to test all new arrivals and quarantine only until results were known. Also if you are quarantining then you need to as other countries have prevent people using public transport and arrange safe transportation.
Come to the conclusion it will be quarantine but not in its recognised form. Basically you will soon be able to come and go as you want but they are just calling it quarantine
Its worse than irrelevant - its actually harmful to our travel industries and business and if anything going to make corona worse as instead of healthy brits going to beaches with little chance of catching it they are all going to be crammed onto beaches in the UK with a higher concentration of carriers
Its all gone very quiet - do we know how it is working at all - I thought I read somewhere roll out to the rest of us was delayed until July but it was a bit short on detail
I would argue that we need to have the rules in place, but they should be linked to the prevalence of infections in the country. So America, Mexico, Brazil (and others) should have mandatory quarantine *now* and Taiwan or New Zealand shouldn't. As the situation changes (say a spike in Italy), then that country goes onto the mandatory quarantine list or off as appropriate. So if we manage to clear the UK of infection, we can adjust the measures to keep it out.
It all seems like a "final push" to me. The measures regarding face masks from the 15th June and this quarantine. It seems reactionary to the drop in numbers of deaths. If measures had been stricter from the start you wouldn't need these counter measures. It's the government trying to save face when in fact it highlights how inept it has been.
I want to see more of the U.K. I've never been to Scotland or Cornwall and I've always wanted to visit the south coast holiday resorts.
