My understanding is that the Ugandan Asians went there in the 50s/60s and were the equivalent of the upper class in that country. They were the top dogs, acquired a fair bit of money and bossed the locals around - then Idi Amin decided he didn't want to be investigated for stealing government funds and staged a coup - the result of which was the reversal of the power dynamic and the Ugandan Asians (including the parents of two Tory MPs) either fled or were forced out as he reallocated their possessions in the same way as Mugabe would later in Zimbabwe.

Absolutely no problem with us providing refuge for those who were citizens. Absolutely no problem with providing refuge for those from Zimbabwe when it happened there either - or Hong Kong now. I do object when one of them climbs to a position of power and then tries to put in a system making it so that her parents wouldn't have been allowed to get that refuge in the country next time it happens.

    Almost
They were installed by the British government as the ruling class, given roles managing the locals who they in turn treated as badly as we had treated the Indians in the days of the Raj.

I saw eyewitness accounts where elderly Indian ladies broke down in tears when they described how awfully they’d treated the black population.

And you’re right, the most objectionable form of racism is the immigrants who object to immigration. I had exactly the same discussions about Portillo in the past, parents came here to flee the Spanish civil war and he was very outspoken about further refugees being allowed here :(

I started to feel.sorry for him when watching that railway programme he did and he was so hopeless at any of the little tasks they gave him to do! I know the saying is those that can't do teach. but I'm sure it should be those that can't do become the government!
