I was thinking only this morning, how come we have to suffer 10+ years of austerity because, due to the Labour Party we can’t afford anything (as now for example, kids are going hungry) but when they want us to vote for brexit, the argument is, they need us more than we need them, we’re the 5th biggest economy in the world!! If we didn’t know before, maybe this article will point some of us in the right direction

We're not, we've dropped a few places since we decided to leave the EU.

We were 6th at the end of 2019 - no idea where we are after the effects of Covid but must be at least below France as well now I am sure

James Ratcliffe with his wealth soaring by five billion pounds to 13 billion during lockdown whilst putting staff on furlough sounds a bit of a knob.

Most decent folks in that situation would feel uneasy and want to do something worthwhile with their billions.

India have gone ahead of us, France were just below. Probably overtake us when latest figures are out.

If the 20% fall in GDP continues for too many months, Brazil could also overtake us this year.

Probably more to do with us never really locking down at all and not using the time given to us by the rubbish attempt at lockdown to prepare for post lockdown with a working test trace and isolate system in place and ready to go which is your best exit strategy. Instead we are no better prepared then we were 3 months ago.

That misses the wider point. Not many people I know will be rushing back to pubs and restaurants. There will also be a reduction in those going to physical shops other than for food I certainly won’t be doing either. Social spending won’t recover. Many people have used the time to reevaluate spending habits myself included.

There is the fear of economic depression looming. People have zero trust or confidence in the Govt. it’s a perfect storm for non essential retail.

got to admit that financially i'm better off as i'm not spending on crap that i dont really need, and going to the club, 4 pints 3x a week is £30, you get a bottle of gin/vodka/brandy for 1\2 that, daft things like freezing milk into cubes for the 2 cups of tea i have a day ( coffee with whitener for the rest) so i'm not throwing 1/2 a carton every couple of days. it soon mounts up

My own wealths soared 33% since the lockdown. I've nivver had as much money but the kitchen chairs are wrecked from working from home and the carpets need changing, the missus will wipe that wealth off

I don’t believe that anyone whose main business interests include hotels, pubs, horse racing or aviation is better off than they were 3 months ago.

That all depends on their insurance coverage and the normal profitability of their business. Many airlines are loss-making or close to it - if they aren't flying (no fuel costs), aren't compensating passengers due to late flights and aren't paying the staff they could be in profit for the first time in a while (especially if their insurance covers the plane leasing and apron costs).

Idiot . Check your facts. The tories, under cameron and his chancellor borrowed more than ALL the previous govts ever did.

Now, would you like to rewrite your piece of rubbish, and check your facts first????

I think the OP's sarcasm has possibly been lost on you? I had to re-read it to be honest.
