It seems RLB picked a peculiar battle to die in imo . There’s plenty of legitimate and immoral actions by the Israeli Government aided by the US to condemn without unfounded accusations imo. We need a balance of views in the Labour Party’s front bench to expose this incompetent Government and hold it to account . Starmer was right to sack her once she refused to take down the tweet and she should be ashamed of the battle she’s picked to make a stand when there are so many obvious and justifiable ones that needs her shield .
Maybe but still a strange battle all the same . she’s not left much room for her supporters to manoeuvre imo .
@Donny-Red That's one way condescendingly ignore the content of my post. You asked a question, would I prefer 2 terms of KS instead of voting for radical change. I gave my answer, no.
PS How much do you really want to be endorsing someone that Nigel Farage heartily agrees with when it comes to the BAME community? It is clear who KS wants to vote labour, and who he doesn't.
I think I'm right in saying that Corbyn got more votes than any Labour leader since Blair's first election. And the direction of travel is clear - reluctant tories are dying more quickly than leftists are becoming old enough to vote. I think you could reasonably construct an argument that it would be better for society for Labour to get elected in a decade on a leftist platform than it is for them to get elected now on a reformist one. I woudn't necessarily back that myself (I'm on the fence), but pursuing it is at least internally consistent. RLB is still young enough to make her mark on a Labour party that might command a big majority.
Genuine question; do you agree with the principle of defunding the police? Do you agree with the statement put out at the weekend by the UK BLM that many widely thought to be anti-Semitic?
What was the anti-semitic statement? I've done a quick search (I'm not on top of politics at the moment) but all I can find is something about them being against annexation? I'd be interested to see the wording.
@Tyketical Masterstroke When I first encountered the concept of 'defund the police' I was absolutely shocked at the sentiment and disagreed strongly. I have taken the time to read, listen, investigate and after that I do agree with it (not all, but mostly). I do not want to sully the cause with my understanding of it as there are a number of nuances and it is a touchy subject. Very, very basic terms to my understanding is that you defund the police and put that funding into community programs, women's refuges, rehabilitation etc etc. rather than simply having police arrest people. Reading about it, the improvement in communities when this has been tried has been huge. The most accessible source I've listened to is the below podcast in which they speak to two experts, one from the UK and one from the USA to discuss the implications and nuances of the subject in quite factual terms for you to disagree with or not. (I do not want to belittle a far worse experience of those in BAME communities, but many on here have encountered heavy handed policing first hand at football matches. I have. I can't imagine what it is like for some.) https://play.acast.com/s/distractio...-distractionpiecespodcastwithscroobiuspip-329 As for the anti-semitic comments, I have not encountered them and would of course strongly disagree. BLM needs to be a combined cause to highlight and stand in unity against all injustices against all (just my opinion). I hope I have worded the above OK. It is a sensitive subject that I do not like typing about for fear of being misinterpreted, but since you asked, I did not want to appear to shirk the question.
@Donny-Red that is why I said in my very first post, a vote is not a bet on who you reckon will win. I will decide based on fully formed policies but the signs are not good on all key issues. I cannot in good conscience vote for a party just because they might win. I know the tories getting into power is likely to happen, I’ll not be voting for them either.
You’re missing my point. If a vote was based on who I think would win I’d have been voting Tory all my life a political party only exists to make a change to the system, it’s primary aim when not in power is to prepare for being in power, to do that they need to build policies (and unfortunately personalities too) in order to gain votes. No party can create a whole manifesto that appeals exactly to you, me, Nudge, etc. The best they can do is to appeal to more people than the opposition. And when it comes to ‘electability’ KS is a better bet than JC or indeed EM. Obviously the nuance is much more complex, but Labour have been dragging around the millstone of antisemitism for years, and to move on they have to put that behind them. Whether that’s ‘right’ or not is irrelevant- it’s pointless being right if the majority of people believe you’re wrong.
Thank you very much for this, and the link, and appreciate the time to answer. My concern is that I don’t think a lot of people have taken the time that you have to fully understand how much further the campaign goes than the racial equality elements of the messaging. Agree with it or not, as you’ve outlined BLM have quite a radical left agenda in comparison to what’s gone before and I just wonder if some of those big organisations who’ve raced to endorse them properly understand that. I do think it’s possible to embrace the concept of black lives matter without endorsing Black Lives Matter.
Looks like the Premier League have got round to reading the website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53242328
