The demise of Wigan could be the tip of the iceberg that sinks the Titanic that is the EFL. The cost to clubs, particularly in Div. 1 & 2 could be devastating. Unless the way tv money distributed by the Premier league is completely revised several clubs could go out of business and eventually the EFL will implode. The Premier League provides around £400m a year in funding to the EFL but around £260m of that goes to nine clubs in the form of parachute payments which leaves around £140 million to be shared by the remaining 63 league clubs. The numbers just don't add up.

It’s about time this parachute payment nonsense was dropped. The money is obscene whilst in the Premier League so why should clubs keep feeding from the trough after relegation?

I hope there's a complete restructure in ow football works, it really needs to. Let's remember that Wigan's demise is nowt to do with COVID in reality, they've overspent for years and now have a dodgy Chinese owner trying to make a quick buck by selling the club to himself and trying to make a fortune off the loans he's given to the club.

I agree, it should be one year only, to give relegated clubs time to restructure after relegation. Additional money should be shared by the other EFL members equally. That might to enough to save the responsible smaller clubs.

All parachute payments should be used to service the player contracts from their PL days only, that's what it's designed for and isn't a terrible idea in theory. They should not be used to purchase additional players when they drop into the Championship like we've seen with Boro, Stoke etc.

Absolutely this. The money should be there to support the wage bill of the players you can't move on. It shouldn't be used to supplement spending £30 million on transfer fees or bringing in more players on £50/£60k a week.

Let them have a parachute payment for 12 months but with strict rules on wage bill and net spend.

The league is run by Chairmen etc so if players wages were sorted out it would only seep into their hands .
While er it’s treated as a buisness nothing will change imo money will go to money . Maybe the Arab Sheiks that want success on the field as a hobby but the rest such as the Yanks are in it mainly for the money imo.

it appears it perfectly legal to use the parachute payments as capital to buy a football club without spending your own money too mate!

    seems a right wheeze that

Didn't Hoyle at Huddersfield take parachute money out of the club to service the debt owed to him, or something of that kind? It's basically one big sweetie jar which anyone concerned with running a club can dip into, at will.

I don't even agree about it being there to support big contracts for existing players. Every player should have relegation clauses in their contracts stating that if we go down so does your money. Big time!! How many players go up the food chain because of massive wage offers on the table, only to never play for that club (or hardly ever). We know something about that system from players who have left Oakwell for better money.

I don't blame the players for doing this by the way. It's just the whole system that smells of rotting fish and only when some big, established names go to the wall will things change. Losing relative minnows like Bury, Maidstone United and the like has virtually no effect at all.

I would have to disagree. There should be no parachute payments to support anything, players contracts should be written as such in the event of relegation your earnings are reduced by X amount.

This will enable clubs to readjust to life outside of the prem. Most of the clubs yo-yo up and down over a couple of seasons anyway

What was the latest figures for getting promoted? Circa 240m and near enough the same over 3 years if you fail and are relegated

No it was the new owner that used the parachute payment to buy the club from Hoyle

No better is it? Scandalous misuse of money that should stay within the game rather than lining business men’s pockets

I’d like to see a simple process of FA telling everyone Salaries are a sliding scale of income.
    For arguments sake
    PL 80% , EFL 60, L1/L2 50 etc.

Sure the figures I have quoted wouldn’t work but only done as an example.

When big money is involved in any industry, it brings out all the "wrong types" who then leech into the appointments and make sure they are getting their fill.
There are some horrible people involved and unfortunately the EFL (who are in a poor position) are weak with compliance and implementation of rules
I would argue they just dont have the staff....so the owners take the p#ss knowing its worth it.
I do hope if theres any positives from covid 19 on our game, its that players, agents and owners have to be more realistic of their worth and some REAL rules are implemented....for the sake of our game.

That’s never gonna work tbh . Players just won’t sign and your left with gambles .
No player will come from say abroad on £15k a week to 20k week but if we relegated it goes down to £8k a week in Championship ,
The whole purpose of the TV money is to see the best leagues with the best players . If clubs don’t spend a big proportion on attracting the best players TV will negotiate lower deals to accommodate less audience and advertising .
Parachute payments should be to service prem players wages currently on the books not to finance another attempt at promotion which it currently does .
Clubs sell the top prem earners then use parachute money on attracting the grafters to get back in then start the process all over again .
If these contracts are not offered players won’t go to these clubs .

That's why there needs to be a complete overhaul, clubs and players alike are going to have to get realistic especially the ones who find themselves currently without a club.

I've always been against parachute payments, why should clubs be rewarded for failure they should have to cut their cloth 1st or like I say insist on a relegation clause where the player drops a % of the wage or put up for sale.

Thing with that is you’re left with elitism . I honestly don’t know the solution only that it’s not so simple .

Parachute money should never have been a thing. Clubs shouldn't be bailed out for the failure of relegation and by giving them money for years to come it gives them a reason to keep overspending.
