I would have kept Pinnock regardless. My biggest gripe at the strategy is the assumption that losing someone on a free transfer is losing money. Staying up in the Championship, and having your new recruits perform much better, is worth more than the £3 million Brentford paid us. That's short sighted. I think if we'd have taken that 'not for sale' stance on Pinnock from say January 2019, we'd have either encouraged bids twice as high as what Brentford offered, or no bids, and a player who understood where he stood for the next 12 months.[/QUOTE] It’s certainly an interesting theory, that a lot support and I have to be honest if I was in charge I like to think I would think the same. But the conundrum is almost every single Football club operate on a similar policy. There are the odd occasions where clubs do let a player run their contract down but it is very few and far between. Most people who run clubs are successful people in their own rights so clearly not daft so it does raise the question why it is not more common place.
Points pre to post is a better indication. I'm not sure Struber could have done more with the hand he has been dealt, I'm just suggesting he might have done more with the whole season. Difficult to argue he wouldn't have done when you look at results since he was in charge.
Not sure on points and not sure how to find out but have found this for a comparison: Pre Struber 15 games scored 16, conceded 33. Just over 1 scored and 2 conceded per game. Struber. 26 games scored 29, conceded 33. Just over 1 scored and 1 conceded per game. Edit: Found after 16 games we were 5 points off safety.
So maybe if the board had listened to the multitude of voices telling them they needed to sign a couple of players who had the slightest idea of how to play in the championship including the head coach at the time we'd have stood a chance they ignored that advice and as a result the club have been in the bottom 3 since september. So the damage was done in August well no sorry it was done in June July and August
They had a chance to rectify the shambles of a transfer window in January, apart from sollbauer it was another poor window. Ludewig wasn't what we needed, he's done alright but a right back wasn't really urgent. An experienced striker and a creative midfielder was paramount along with the centre back.
Agree with you on the hands he’s been dealt tbh. I thought Anderson had turned a corner , realised his mistakes and with no crowd pressure looked like a defender, then all of a sudden the demon returned on three. Other occasions besides the goal the attacker gets the better of him in positions he shouldn’t be gambling in .
aren’t we give or take the same number of points away from avoiding relegation. From memory 5 then and 4 now?
Disagree entirely. Trying to pin the blame on Stendel is just plain wrong and doesn't take into account that these piss poor players were even less experienced then
Our best performance of the season was against Fulham on the opening day . We played a very good team off the park and Stendels tactics were spot on . Inexplicably we never played the same tactically under Stendel . Think Struber has done the best he could have done under the circumstances but today everyone had an off day including Struber , big games coming up , third from bottom might be good enough
Interestingly if you look at the tables, you can see all the bottom half teams have improved and the top half have picked up a smaller ratio*. This could mean many things or absolutely nothing at all, it what it shows is we can’t just look at our form alone. *not independently checked every team.
I think we just got lucky that day in that although Mitrovic is a very good striker he isn’t interested in pressing & hassling defenders. I also think history’s been re-written with that game. Although we were the better side first half they were all over us in the second half & had two cleared off the line. In our second game as soon as Wednesday pressed us our tactics fell to pieces. Everyone else then knew that our defenders couldn’t play out from the back under any kind of pressure.
We are but I really don’t see what point you are trying to make. 9 points from 16 games if you don’t improve becomes 23 points from 41. We have so far achieved 18 more points under Struber than we could have expected had we just carried on. We are unfortunate that all sides have improved had the rest of the bottom 4 all kept the same form as they had for the first 16 games we would now be 6 points clear. Ultimately though you can’t judge a manager based on how the teams around him performed Strubers based on current points performance would have had us on 53 points already after 41 games. To imply we haven’t really improved is not a sensible way to look at the figures
