Remember watching the Levellers at City Hall a few times in my youth. Wonderful memories. Saw blink at the Arena a couple of years back too. Not as good, not as keen on those sort of venues.
Feel for the poor folk losing their jobs, when this is over the venues will strike back up again, but the staffs issues are now not in the future and there’s little about to apply for.
I saw Blink at Leeds arena and the sound was terrible. Saw Slipknot at Sheff which sounded better but im with you, i prefer smaller music venues. Only problem with that is getting tickets. I really fear for the live music industry.
After January, new visa requirements mean any overseas artist must pay ~£250 for a visa and demonstrate that they have been in credit for the 3 months previously. This is going to make it significantly more expensive for smaller bands to tour the UK.
Thoughts with the workers. Confused by the wording of the original tweet, are they not entitled to some of the £1.57bn announced for the arts sector? Hopefully that might alter the outcome?
Sheffield City Hall has a lot of great memories for me of stellar concerts throughout the 1970s. King Crimson, Deep Purple, Genesis, Mike Oldfield and many more. Probably the one that stands out though was Pink Floyd doing Dark Side of the Moon not long after its release. Stereo sounds were still a novelty but SURROUND sound was out if this world! As they were taking the stage the boom, boom, boom was rhythmically but quietly going around the hall, gradually increasing the volume until they launched into Speak to Me/Breathe. Oh for a time machine to relive nights like this .......
I saw the Australian Pink Floyd there about 18 months ago. That was good but obviously would’ve loved to have seen The Pink Floyd in their Hay day. Saw Nazareth, there and a certain up and coming Barnsley band were supporting act, Saxon. Unfortunately we stayed in the Wapentek bar too long and missed them. Also saw Wishbone Ash there
Aussie Floyd are a pretty decent substitute for the real thing. I was lucky to see the real thing again when they played Earls Court for a week (I think) building that fantastic Wall across the stage in 1980. Oh yes and I forgot to add Wishbone Ash To my list of Sheffield highlights
De La Salle used to have their annual Speech nights at City Hall and in my first year I was selected to sing in the full school choir. Remember that the acoustics were not very good although, when I saw the Jools Holland Band there some years later, it was less noticeable.
Fingrs crossed, it'll be a mothballing job rather than a permanent closure, although that's no comfort if you're out of a job. Saw my first concert there too. Steve Hillage, 1979. Also saw Motorhead with Saxon supporting.... Stranglers... Judas Priest... Had some great times at the City Hall.
My first ever gig was T Rex at Sheffield City Hall and strangely enough my last one was Elvis Costello at the same venue just before the lockdown.
Was at City Hall in February watching the amazing Beth Hart , like others have said I almost lived at the place in the 70’s , great memories great times
My wife has been in touch with the City Hall, as she & our daughter are going to see Oti Mabuse perform there next April. She's been told that all the rumours of it closing are absolute rubbish.
