Cobblers, not kidding myself, Tories are not only self- serving, they serve their paymasters who are basically of the same ilk. The only people that kid thessens are fools of ordinary folk who vote for them.
I am very fortunate. Even so, there’s no reason what I’ve described can’t be given to all that make the switch. The savings to the company should be passed on to the employees. Employers have a duty of care to ensure a safe environment and whether at home or in an office, they have to ensure it’s suitable. If you’re asked to work from home but unable to do so safely, the employer has to make it safe.
Great for the likes of you and me that have a spare room for an office. if we need one. But the majority of workers won't have and no doubt this will shaft the working class and young even more. No surprises there.
I think it’s more likely that wages will stay the same, but costs of products and services will rise. With the net effect being a pay cut.
Hmm well in my experience you won't find many employers who will be giving ten grand to a minimum wage call centre employee to do up their house. And my employer wouldn't give a pay rise for them working from home. They'd see it as being a benefit for the employee who no longer has to travel to work or pay petrol.
Mainly because what if you have high turnover? Does every new employee automatically get £10k to do theirs up too or was it only for current employers at the time of switch? Every £10k you give away is gone, not invested in office space that you can use for your next employee.
Every new employee gets $10k also. They used to pay more than that though on average, as anyone in the US was relocated to San Francisco with the company paying relocation fees. I believe the office was also rented, not bought, so that was money lost anyway. Swings and Roundabouts. I accept that this is a benefit to working in an in-demand industry and wouldn’t be available to minimum wage employees. The employer still has a duty of care though to ensure that everyone’s working environment is safe.
I will also point out that it’s not just a flat $10k bonus, it’s a budget that you have to submit costs for. I had to justify all the items I bought.
That's still a lot of money for any employer to pay. Take who I work for for example. If we were to ask all the office staff to work from home that would be 120 grand up front cost and an office sat empty with the knowledge that as 4 of those staff are in their 60s it's another 40 grand minimum in the next few years plus extra for anyone who decides to leave. And at what saving? A few lightbulbs and an air conditioning unit?
We own our premises and the office space is only around 5% of the total floor space id say. In fact it's probably less than that.
The figures today make for grim reading even for someone as optimistic as me and would only get worse with more people expected to start using public transport again.
Call centres have only got a limited time left in their current format - automation on the back-end will significantly remove the need to people except for edge cases. Most will be gone within the next 5-10 years.
