The impending points deduction

    I’ve heard that any points deducted for Wigan and wash day will take place after the games on Wednesday night and just enough points will be deducted to keep both teams up!

    That's not how I understand it. The way that points deductions work, for administration at least, means that IF the points deduction relegates a team, then they will be deducted THAT SAME season. If it doesn't then they'll start next season on -12. So points will be deducted from Wigan depending on how they do on Wednesday.

    I've no idea what's going on with that team at S6.

    My understanding was that it's only if they are already down that the deduction defers to next season. If not then it comes off this season. So if Wigan are more than 12 points clear then it will still come off this season and they will effectively go unpunished.

    Thats how the EFL explained it when they announced the punishment. - seems slightly strange that if you go down you get punished but if you were staying up you dont
    I think a farer way to apply the punishment would be - if the 12 point deduction sends you down then its applied this season. If it doesnt send you down or you are already down its applied next. The OP is incorrect in the idea that just enough points will be deducted to keep Wigan up - its 12 points - though they have appealed. As for the Fowls - I have no idea

    The only reason they are applied at the end is whether or not the team getting the deduction is in relegation places. If they aren't they get the points deduction now. If they are, they get it next season. It is simple.

    why do people keep misunderstanding this deduction? I actually thought it was quite clearly stated it only applys next season if they finished in the bottom 3 otherwise its this season. its been done in a way that impacts Wigan the most it possibly could and rightly so

    Actually its not quite the way that impacts Wigan the most see my post above - but its the rules and has been applied ever since Leeds tried to fiddle the system. Id prefer the system where if 12 points sends you down its applied this season but if you are already down or comfortably safe its applied next - but that isnt the rule

    Wigan out of bottom 3 so come half 9 Wednesday night - 12 will be applied hopefully pushing them into a relegation place

    I honestly think that a decision has already been made on Wednesday but because there are a further 5 teams in the mix for relegation it won't be announced until after the final game

    That's my understanding on the Wigan situation. The only issue with them is that they can still appeal the deduction.

    It's crazy that after 46 games, some teams still won't know what league they'll be playing in next season.

    But surely it's more unfair to withhold the information as it stops teams from knowing what they need to stay up.

    Presumably you agree that it should be applied to teams in the top six too.

    Interestingly, aren’t there teams currently in the Premier League that got there by flouting the EFL financial fair play rules? That’s a slightly different discussion though.

    Do they apply the same “frivolous appeal” rules to administration ? Increase the penalty by another few games/points ?

    Yes Bournemouth is definitely one, but points deductions do not apply in the Premier League so they agreed to a £5m fine instead

    Leicester and Brighton too, I think. Leicester paid about £5m in the end, not sure with Brighton, but pretty sure if they hadn't gone up when they did they'd have been knackered for FFP spending.
