INTERVIEW | Dane Murphy Interviews In an exclusive interview with iFollow Barnsley, Chief Executive, Dane Murphy reflected on a ‘remarkable’ campaign that saw its fair share of challenges both on and off the pitch. Continue reading on the official site...
Seems fairly adamant we will be keeping the squad together this closed season. Again admits errors in their approach and some of their decisions.
I read it as tempering expectation. These young lads have kept us up and are now championship experienced players. Don’t be surprised to see more of the same
Just watched it. Once more he comes across as a genuine guy. The interview wasn't particularly insightful but he does seem to care about the club. No doubt he will get the usual negative comment on here but, just like the players, the lad needs our patience and support.
Agree on this. Always good to hear from the CEO and nice for it to be in a more relaxed environment than the formal one we're used to. Nothing groundbreaking, but any communication is good communication and at least the message out to other clubs is that players aren't for sale (even if, as expected, one or two leave).
In principle nothing wrong with keeping the young squad together but can the ambitions of the club match the ambitions of the players in the longer term .Is championship mid table a fair aspiration next season ?
I hope they don’t put too much faith in these lads for next year though, they must strengthen and invest heavily in the window. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but I can’t help but think back to the Flitcroft survival season, he stayed loyal to a group of players who did a good job at getting us safe but Jesus Christ they were woeful the year after. It’s vital we carry on building this side.
It's a bit strange that he gives credit to Jack Walton and Matty Wolfe but doesn't mention , Woodrow, Chapiln, Sollbauer, etc. It was just a bit dull after a massive achievement.
I agree with most of what you say , however , with the pandemic set to linger on for a good while yet , heavy investment might be out of the question, as the current situation will certainly impact not only our budget, but football in general may well have to cut its cloth for the immediate future
Can't see there being 'heavy' investment, but hopefully more targeted than signing 10 or so players in a single window like last year. Am fairly resigned to Woodrow being sold, but if that can be used to buy 2 or 3 players that can improve the team (bear in mind, Woodrow hasn't made the starting 11 in the last couple of games), that wont be too bad a window. Looking at the 11 against Brentford, I'd say we need to look for no.10 that's better in that role than Thomas. A right footed CM to replace Ritz and a target man / hold up player that can give us a plan B in games. That would help the likes of Andersen, Williams, Styles, Chaplin, Brown etc... develop into Championship players
A safe statement; nothing grounbreaking but as Loko says it is better than no noise at all. There are two mistakes they can make this summer: 1) Accepting that this squad is now 'of established championship experience' and only bolstering the squad with the next batch of youngsters 2) Expecting the fans to fall for it again if they do. It's all well and good acknowledging mistakes; it's quite another proving you have learnt from them I do however think that the 'club statement' released on Friday had an air of authority about it and I for one see that as a signal of intent. Am looking forward with interest to the next few weeks.
I’ll be honest, this has come into my thought patterns too. The form the following season after the survival was such a huge difference. However, a lot of those players were older and not really pulling their fingers out, just sort of plodding along. Flitcroft got them going and that’s why we picked up. This side is a young side that are all gaining experience all the time. These lads all want to show that they can perform and given they’ve achieved safety, I think they should be allowed to show they can do it again and go even higher. We probably need more quality overall in the squad but I’m hoping for a summer where there isn’t a huge turnaround of players.
Have you watched the full video? He singles out all those players (minus Sollbauer I think) as being integral to us the last few months
