Saying that in response to us staying in the championship, due to other clubs owners overspending, the owners “need to get chequebook out”

    Not a hint of irony.

No one is calling for reckless spending, but in order to push on and avoid another relegation battle then the chequebook needs to be opened. If money isnt wasted like last season then we ll be fine.

Funnily enough a Wigan fan said something similar to me yesterday

    Something along the lines of:

"If you had a billionaire owner, wouldn't you want him to splash the cash"

Pointed out we do have wealthy owners (of course how wealthy is very much option to discussion and debate) and that yes I'd love us to spend more, reckless spending would be disastrous. If we sell players we should spend as much of that as we can, if we can afford to

They really don't seem to understand the overspending part, actually said its fine because their owners would foot the bill. Tried to point out that's exactly where the issue lies, the club itself cannot afford that based on revenue generated

The owners shouldn’t be spending anything though.

The club should only spend what it brings in. We need to be sustainable

That's not how business works in all fairness. There has to be an element of speculate to accumulate and that still keeps us sustainable.

It’s a fact though that we do need to strengthen in key areas and we haven't got much time to do it.
I’m not talking about going mad just don’t want to be playing catch up all season.
Also as RH said you do need to speculate a bit to keep existing best players and management from getting frustrated and hopping it.

That’s absolutely how business works. Beyond initial startup costs, there’s only football where owners pump in so much from personal wealth. It’s not sustainable.

Funnily enough I actually had a few fans having a go at me because I’d got the audacity to celebrate our victory over Brentford, one of them said that a true football fan would have the decency not to celebrate another teams relegation....What I’d actually put was...fantastic result lads, thoroughly deserved, let’s kick on from here!.

There’s me thinking that’s what football fans had always done, or did I just imagine all those ‘going down ‘ chants

There'll be a few players coming in and going out as usual, I'm sure, hopefully nothing mental like in previous years - evolution not revolution and all that.
I see the owners following exactly the same business model but with maybe 2 or 3 in-comings but far more out-goings.
We've got a lot of our players on long term contracts. The last 20 or so matches have proved we can be a bottom half of the Championship side, which I think is as much as we can aspire to next season - and I'm fine with that if it means we live within our means. There'll be more Sheff Weds and Wigan's next year I'm guessing which will prove we are conducting ourselves correctly.

You could extend that thought process to a true fan wouldn’t celebrate winning a game or scoring a goal.
Which sort raises the question why follow football?

We aren't conducting ourselves correctly though.

Correctly isn't throwing money at the likes of Malik wills to sit on the sidelines, thiam to sit in the reserves, pinillos, cavare the same, to buy people like Thomas and have him play a handful of games, waste money on Jordan green, Bahre, Ritzmaier, Radlinger and Schmidt.

Doing it right is buying quality over quantity. Our approach under these owners has been the very definition of buy cheap, buy twice.

People talk about how we haven't spent money we can't afford, for me we have wasted most of the money that we do have.

I agree with this 100%. A change in strategy is needed. We need to sign better players and experience to help our young talent grow.

What we don’t need is owners pumping millions into the club buying players on unsustainable wages.

No we don't but I don't think many people have ever advocated that. Sure a few have but then we have to remember there are fans of ours who want us to move grounds, change our kit, badge and rename ourselves the Yorkshire tykes.

The only actual investment I'd like to see from them would be in terms of infrastructure which I think is common practice for businesses to spend money they don't have on. Usually in the form of loans. Our owners seem to refuse to do even that which has led to our ground getting more and more rundown than it was under Patrick.

The other investment I think they should have made was a token one to match what they were asking their customers to donate just a month ago.

I live within my means but have a mortgage. I dont know any business where at some point they haven't outlayed more than they had coming in.

I'm not saying it's a majority, but there are people replying to Chien's tweet yesterday saying "get blank cheque out to make sure we're not in this position next season" - Those are the people I'm calling out, not people that just think we need a change of strategy.

It's risky in football. Buying unaffordable players (your house) by increasing debt (your mortgage) only to find that they're not the players you thought they were (the house has dry rot), means you've undermined any hope of longer term sustainability (the house collapses leaving you homeless).

That said, small investments (Sollbauer) can lead to significant unexpected gains. It's a very difficult balancing act, running a football club the right way. And much easier to do from the sidelines. ;)

There are plans to improve the infastructure, specifically a new West Stand incorporating a bar. Dane alluded to it in his recent round of pressers. But ownership of the land is a prerequisite.

The positive thing about us at the minute is that most of the team haven' reached there full potential yet, so who knows what they can achieve if kept together along with Struber.
Im hoping that we sell fringe players and let Struber sign specific targets to add a bit more quality that we still lack.
