Let's hope those 2 weapons aren't used ever again.

Probably not millions, but certainly a fair few tens of thousands. With the USA, UK, Chines, Indian and Russian armies heading towards Japan it was only a matter of time before they surrendered - but without a carpet bombing first the loss of life would be high.

It showed the world what would happen if it happened again and acted as a necessary nuclear deterrent to this day.

they would still have been digging them out of rat holes into the 50's. Just look at Okinawa Saipan and Iwo jima. they were still finding troops in the jungles into the 70's

My poor Uncle Albert was a tortured soul when I was growing up. Him and his brother Sidney served in Burma and were Jap POWs working on the railway. Albert watched the Japs murder his brother (buried alive). He was then transferred to Hiroshima where he saw / felt the explosion. For their own safety, him and other POWs were moved to a town called Nagasaki.

He spoke to newspapers and TV in later life, but there was no help available to folk like him for donkeys years. I only saw one person in my life more tortured and that was a Somme veteran I had as a teacher as a young boy.

Unthinkable to have been involved in those nuclear bomb areas. Having just seen the impact in Beirut yesterday and then the news reporting that it was about 1/10th the size of the Hiroshima explosion. Jeez.

My wife’s grandad was a prisoner of the Japanese in Burma, He was a 14st super fit athlete when he went in, and as one of 400 that survived out of about 3000 that went in, he weighed just over 6st. He rarely spoke about it and would never get in a Japanese car or buy a Jap product until the day he died.

Sidney was batman to some Jap military senior bloke. When he died, Sidney had to dig his grave, then in front of the whole camp was buried with his 'boss'. Alive. I could not imagine watching my sibling go in that way.

Given the Bashido code in Japan they would not have surrendered unless faced with total obliteration. Allied forces reckoned on a million casualties to take and quell Japan. One of the saddest lesser known back stories of the war was that of Freddie Hockley, a FAA pilot captured by the Japanese. They surrendered on 15/8 but the document wasnt signed until 2nd sept aboard USS Missouri. Nine hours after the surrender was announced he was taken to a mountain and shot- a murder pure and simple. The two officers who shot him (including one who's wife virtually begged him not to do it) were subsequently hung. I think a fair indication of the Japanese military ethos in Aug 1945 and whilst it is right we mark the day and japan's incredible rise since then, I think we could not have done anything any different

my dads like that, hates the effin japs and would not pi55 on them if they were on fire,he worked with several at cortonwood who had endured the japs hospitality ,all them were bad with their nerves and wore jam jar bottom specs as a result of the conditions they were kept in

Just imagine coming home from that lot then having to start in the pit again.

sorry scoff thats rubbish mate, the japs have it ingrained in them to never surrender, more so 80 or so years ago.

hopefully the events that finish with the nuclear bombing of japan serve as a reminder when everything goes belly up.

Was that with the Mogwai soundtrack? Saw them perform it live with the doc being played at the same time. Was incredibly moving
