Is Woodrow actually that good? I mean obviously he’s good but good to the kind of level where he’s first name on the team sheet? I never thought he was anywhere near as good as Moore for example. He just doesn’t have enough to his game. He doesn’t have the pace to stretch teams, he doesn’t battle with centre backs, he doesn’t win headers, he doesn’t create many chances & he didn’t get many poachers goals even when playing as a striker. If you look at almost all of his success it comes from picking the ball up by dropping deep off the other striker or been in that space from playing as a no. 10 & getting a shot away. Is it more likely that he’s been short on confidence for 9 months or does logic suggest he’s been found out a bit & doesn’t have much more to his game? If your a championship defender what’s your manager saying to you about Woodrow? He’s going to warn you about how good he is at shooting from distance but there’s not a lot else you’re going to be worried about. Might sound harsh on someone who’s done very well for us but I feel it’s fair.
Woodrows never tended to play well he’s just scored goals. Problem is now he he’s not scoring. It’s not like this is just a blip it’s carried on from the end of last year too.
I like Woodrow, but he's not a striker. I will always stand by that. He always dropped very deep. He's a lot better when there's people ahead of him.
At the moment he’s a gamble for somebody to want to spend big money IMHO, certainly above league 1. You can argue all you like about whether he fits in the system or not but he has still had a lot of chances to score and not looked like taking them.
Except the one’s our board sells, We never seem to get a true value when we sell our best players on, this board always sells them for peanuts, But to replace them with the same quality of players costs us more that why they never get replaced with a player that can it the ground running it’s always a player for the future not the here & now.
If Cauley goes which seems likely firstly I’ll be gutted but we will need two strikers, if he stays we still need a target man
1. Is he really proven at this level? 2. How much did we get for Moore? (Who I felt was the better asset of the two). I’m not trying to argue with you btw, I just don’t share any optimism that this board will ever get true value for a player. £2million up front for Brown with a conditional additional £500k was it? Cauley is a decent player, but he hasn’t been good for months, arguments about systems are one thing but we can only sell him for what will be offered, and clubs won’t bid high for him for the two most obvious reasons - the first being the player probably isn’t in the form to warrant it, but the main one being that the club will certainly accept a lower offer. We have form for it - and it is also abundantly clear that Struber wants to cash in to bring in someone else, and when you want to sell a player, as opposed to clubs wanting to buy him, that knocks a good bit off the value too. Like I say, it’ll be undisclosed. It ought to be a lot more than £2million but I’d be amazed if it was £5million. In fact if we got £3million cash up front with some add-ons I’d be quite surprised. Which is why I don’t see the point in selling, we won’t get much quality coming in to replace him for that kind of money.
This thread you’ve started really takes the biscuit. People whinging and whining about a transfer fee that hasn’t even happened The prize goes to the comment ’it won’t be £5m it will be undisclosed but nearer £2m’. What the ........?
As we're in the realm of theory I wonder whether the current boardroom disagreements are going to ruin our prospects for this season? A chief executive who doesn't know how much he has to spend because of a pending court case. An eye on cashing in on playing assets before the consortium walk away? I hope not, but that is my fear and I have some faith that the situation will be resolved, but will it be resolved before the transfer window closes? Experience of watching the reds has taught me to expect the best and prepare for the worst. If we were to lose Woodrow and Mowatt and not able to recruit replacements is the worst scenario, because it would cost us the coach as well.
I think you can argue against this by pointing at his goals for us in that first season. Wasn’t it something like 15 from 19 being first touch finishes? He scored some amazing goals from outside the box, but the majority were in the box, playing as a striker, hitting it first time. I can’t remember the last time he really hit the ball cleanly. Not like he used to do regularly. But you’re right, he has always dropped deep since signing for us which is why I don’t fall out with him playing in that Number 10 role.
I was thinking more in the championship but that’s true his first time finishing was superb. Made goals like the one at Southend look easy when it was anything but. I think the best solution is him playing in the no. 10 role as he doesn’t suit the pressing style & the rest of the players have been bought to play that way
On the one hand it's rather amusing, I agree. On the other hand, it shows how little faith people have in the powers that be to get true value, that people are vehemently debating the size of a completely imaginary transfer fee! For the record, I still think we'll get around £5 million if we sell, but not much more.
