I'd agree with Luke Steele. This one won't go down well but Hammill is overrated by our fans in my opinion. Outside of Barnsley I always thought Casillas and Roberto Carlos were overrated.
Leroy Lita, Deon Burton Gary O'connor for us. Lingard. Jack Wiltshire. Eric Dier. Lots to choose from.
David Watson? Really? I honestly think if he’d not got his injury he’d have gone on to play for a bigger club and maybe even England - his height was the only issue. But I’ve still not seen a better shotstopper play for us. Even after he retired I saw him in a preseason game against a Man Utd XI - might have been big Eric’s testimonial. Shot knee, retired, not played a pro game for probably three years and he still made a worldy of a save down to the bottom corner and looked the part for the whole half he played. If he had a couple more inches... well we’ve all wished for that I guess (!) but in all seriousness if he was 6’2” and not 5’10” or 5’11”, he’d have been an absolute machine. He was robbed of most of his career; he’d have gotten over that injury had it happened even five years later.
I think a lot of the players mentioned aren’t overrated, they just didn’t fulfil their potential due to injuries. Jack Wilshere gets a mention above, he was outstanding in the premier league from age 17 up to his mid-20’s. He was the best player on the pitch against a peak Barcelona under Guardiola. He was an incredible talent. He just kept getting crocked & now aged 28 he’s barely played for two seasons & looks to be on the verge of retirement. Him, Walcott, Sturridge & Wellbeck are proof of why it’s complete nonsense building for the future with the England team. They were all played lots by Hodgson back around 2012 & look at them now. All wrecks when they should be in their primes. Tournaments only come around every two years, it should be about the here & now & trying to win things.
That's probably because England haven't been good enough to win those games, and rarely create much in such games.
For the Reds: Jacob Mellis Diego Arismendi Paddy McCort Elsewhere: Steve Mcmanaman Wayne Rooney Carlton Palmer (How did he ever play for England?)
True. Part of which Kane bears responsibility. I'd love him to be world class as he's often described. In my opinion he isn't.
Definitely Rooney for England. Banged in a load of easy goals against crap opponents but went missing in major tournaments after 2004. The fact that John Stones has more World Cup goals than him says an awful lot. The Conqueror of Kazhakstan, The Master of Montenegro, The Subjugator of San Marino.
Anderson I don't think is fair. He was brilliant before that injury (and when his hair was short), as was Heinz Müller.
Adam Hamill is over rated. I need to let that sink in for a while and come up with a reasoned response
I always think he looks like a lad who’s won a raffle to play. I just don’t get how he’s anywhere near the England squad? Same goes for Eric Dier, there must be at lest 10 English centre halves better than him?
