Just a bit of fun to take minds off the rubbish that is happening (or not) down at Oakwell. You can pick one GK, one Defender, One Midfield and One striker from Barnsley’s past players in their prime to bring back to the current team. I only started getting interested around 1996 hence my picks are from 96 onward. GK - Dave Watson Defender - Bobby Hassell Midfield - Craig Hignett Striker - Bruce Dyer
Almost the same as I would have put - I am old enough to have seen Pat Howard play but had several others I would have put ahead of him Ian Evans and Paul Futcher spring to mind in addition to Mick
Heinz Muller - we need a big commanding bloke to organise us. Chris Morgan - I'm not his biggest fan from a personal perspective, but he would add toughness and backbone. Adam Hammill - We need wide men, we need skill, we need someone to galvanise the fanbase. Neil Shipperley - Can finish. Works hard. Holds the ball up. Good in the air. Is a presence. Hopefully he keeps his lad in his trousers. I've tried to look at what the current squad needs.
Goalkeeper Peter Springett Defender Mick McCarthy Midfield Neil Redfearn* Striker Ashley Ward * under normal circumstances I'd go with Ronnie Glavin every time, but we need more steel in midfield and Redders would give us that. Plus he scores too.
Goalkeeper David Watson Defender Mark Smith Midfield Conor Hourihane Striker Andy Payton I've gone a bit leftfield. We cant score for toffee and if we attack, we expose the keeper at the back. Watson is the best one on one keeper i've seen for us. So why he gets my vote. Seeing as we can't score, I'd have Hourihane for his amazing set piece delivery and Mark Smith to attack it. That alone I reckon would get you an extra 15 goals a year! And to allow us to soak up pressure and counter without being too expansive, I'd have Payton who was a pure goalscorer, but also the best one on one finisher I've probably seen us have. The way he ran always entertained me too!
GK Watson but it was close loved Clive Baker DEF Eaden so underrated and set the tempo, great crosser and servant of the club. Special mentions for Gerry, Fleming and De Zeeuw. MID Redders end of....too young to have seen Ronnie ATT Ward cos of level he played at, but Dyer, Hendrie, Wilko and Currie all were ace. Special mention for Sheron he was playing in poor teams and his football brain was too advanced for those he played with.
Definitely not Dave Watson... He's wasn't anything special. He had no presence and made himself small when one on one... Watch the goals we conceded in the Premiership.. Search YouTube there's no dave Watson saves... Heinz muller was different class. Even Miller was better than watson
Muller Golbourne Hourihane Dyer Golbourne is obviously only in there because we’ve got no left backs! #AnnouncePromotion
