I don’t think we’re limited to 3-5-2 and I think the way football has moved on since then there’s different versions and a lot more fluidity to it these days. The wing backs cutting inside to play as additional central midfielders being one example. We’ve mirrored Chelsea and Citeh with these tactics twice this season. Kane is a creative player. Mowatt is a creative player. And Styles is as well in a different way to those two. The skill set is there for me but we’ve not been able to get the right balance or the right players in the right positions. I’m hopeful we’ve given the new gaffer a chance at making us much more of a threat going forward without being at risk of losing what made us look a lot more solid during lockdown.
Mowatt was doing that in League 1. We haven't yet see him do it in this division. I agree he's been moved further back, but I think he's functional in this league, hindered by his lack of pace, where as he was excellent in the league below as his skill overcame his lack of pace.
But our midfielders weren’t good enough. I know that the majority of fans were screaming out for a striker, but I think we’re a better team for the midfield improvements as it gives us a chance at getting a lot more out of the strikers that are already here.
Mowatt was creating chances for us when he was played in a more advanced role under Stendel. Problem at the time was it was Ossie Ardilles ‘we’ll score more than you’ football and we never did. He also completely ran the show at Elland Road during lockdown when he was allowed to get further up the pitch and pull the strings. He’s capable, in a better midfield, to have much more of an impact on games.
Was it the ‘Ossie Ardiles’ approach or simply inexperienced defenders/midfielders making silly mistakes? I can think of several examples off the top of my head. I’m not sure what Stendel, or any manager, is supposed to do about that (other than sign Solbauer).
Probably a blend of both to be honest. The way we attacked Brentford, as one example, was just kamikaze football. As the result proved. You could argue some of the silly mistakes were down to the refusal to clear danger - but there were definitely some silly ones. We started clearing it a lot more instantly under Struber,
75 minutes in and we haven't created a single chance from open play and haven't scored from open play this season. Hoping this tempts fate
Even the commentators are bemoaning our physical presence up front and yet another manager has resorted to playing centre backs up top as it's our only physical option. Terrible transfer window
We created two chances for Woodrow first half? We were a whisker away from creating two or three chances second half. Thought some of our forward play was much, much improved vs. other games this season. Not quite good enough but we were well deserving of a point out of that game.
You're seeing things that I'm simply not seeing. Played well, deserved the draw, but didn't create one single goal scoring opportunity in 90 minutes frome open play. And we've created about 5 in the last 6 months. And whether we play Thomas on the wing or in the number 10 position, he can't play football, he just can't.
Schmidt has scored some important goals for us, but how many starts has he had, and how many minutes has he played? I think his contract will be up before he gets a proper run in the team.
Woodrow in the first minute had a great chance. He would have probably have scored it this time last season he also had a decent chance in the first half but shot straight at the keeper We did too many times mess up the final ball and not create a clear chance when we could have Agree on Thomas though
Farnham has already answered for me but Woodrow had two chances first half. Then the goal and the other chance for Soll from the set piece (I know you're discounting those but it adds to a more prosperous first half). We were much less 'huff and puff' today and had a bit more substance about us. Players should have done better with individual moments - but agree on Thomas' contribution today. I'm always positive though, or try to be, and he was scaring the Bristol players to death almost every time he had the ball. There's definitely a footballer in there and he looked a lot more comfortable, other than his final ball or decision making, being out wide. He twice slipped Sollbauer in by getting Bristol to back off.
I recall us creating a good chance for Woodrow before Helik scored. I realise that stats are not the be all and end all, but Fotmob stats have us creating 15 chances as against their 10 and of those only 2 were big chances for us whilst they had 3 big chances. Don't think you will find many on here arguing with you about Thomas though.
