You often see people associating certain clubs with things that have happened historically, for better or worse. Like I've heard a lot of people say "doing a Leeds" to describe bottling it at the end of a season (in any league), and "doing a Leicester" to describe a ridiculous upset.

If someone said "doing a Barnsley" and you didn't know the context, what would you assume they meant?

What is the most Barnsley thing that can happen to a football club?

Personally I think it's flogging the core of a good squad, but we seem to have (mostly!) avoided that this window.

And there is my "can't sleep so I'll check the BBS" incoherent rambling for tonight

It has to be "surviving relegation" from the Championship / old 2nd Division. I've lost count of the number of times we've been in the bottom 3 at the start of the season and stayed up. We've only actually been relegated from the 2nd tier 3 times in the last 60 odd years (from memory - I'll check the stats later)

Scoring and then sitting back instead of going for the jugular. Prime example being wilsons 2nd stint.

Buying a goalkeeper with a broken hand

For a while it was a small club getting to the Premier League. People from around the country did genuinely like us and wished us well. Smaller clubs that repeated the same feat were the new Barnsley. But that's too long ago now to resonate.

Another thing we've done that caught the attention of the media, other football fans and even the wider population was the promotion under Hecky. Bottom of the league in December, promoted by the end of the season. People knew about that.

But if I ever talk to a football fan of any other team the one thing they mention is that we sell all our best players. They don't know if we sell them cheap or get loads of money, they just know we give ourselves no chance because we sell everybody. That's doing a Barnsley.

    Slightly different.
Just like watching Brazil. became synonymous with Barnsley ( as it was created by Barnsley fan then stolen by others) and it truly was a joy to watch.

    on the never happened side.
Paul Sykes wanted to take over. The amount of people that made that folklore beggars belief.

‘Battling Barnsley’ is probably the most linked term.

You're right about the relegations thing. Which is why it's a bit unfair that we've been labelled a yo-yo team. We'd make a pretty **** yoyo if we only went up and down 3 times in 60 years.

Not scoring against a team with10 men.

    Conceding in stoppage time.

Scoring deep into stoppage time? It used to be a Liverpool thing back in the 70s and 80s but we seem to have done it several times lately, on Saturday against Brizzle, and at the end of last season against Forest and Brentford.

Avoiding relegation from the Championship by virtue of other teams being deducted points.

I am by no means saying that the other clubs, Portsmouth and Wigan, did not deserve their fate, but fans of many other clubs who notice such things may not appreciate the nuances, unless their club has been in a similar position.

It used to be throwing leads away in the last ten minutes. Letting in last minute equalisers.

Not exactly football related but I "Do a barnsley" every week.

Scatter gun approach to shopping which on paper looks great.

Then when I sit and do a meal, realise I've always 1 or 2 ingredients missing.

Then I have an average or good meal, when I know it could have been great if I had just taken the time to get the shopping right.

I've now loads of stuff in the cupboards that require disposal or am trying to use them up in all sorts of ways.

But by the time I get the right ingredients, the previous ones have been used already and gone.

Thing is I do the shopping myself, so I've only the chef to blame :)

    Recently I'd describe it as:
Appointing head coaches who have memorable first seasons, but who struggle to get results thereafter.

Lots of clubs sell their best players all the time
We not unique in that sense so I’d rule that out .
Yo yo club ? Nah not for me over many years.
The only phrase I can recount that’s stuck with Barnsley over many years and been used in many a media outlook and write up is
“Battling Barnsley” all the others have been short term Imo .

off topic a bit I know but I've been very scatter gun with my shopping this year with the covid crisis etc. Can't wait to get out of the shop when I get there, so I just run round and pick up a load of the same items I know I'm going to use in the next week. I can't remember the last time I experimented cooking a new meal, but it was nearly 12 months ago. It's all getting a bit boring cooking the same few meals over and over and over again.

That's the one that annoys me most. Majority of the time we go a couple of goals down the game either peters out or we get a good hiding.
