I remember when we beat Stoke 1-0 away and Ferenczi scored the winner. It was live on Sky Sports. It wasn't comfortable viewing they battered us that night but we held on for a valuable win.
I can't remember. I just remember the curling effort from Ferenczi nestling in the net and thinking we've a long time to hold out here.
I remember it thinking we had signed a world beater. He was never that but a good un non the less. Just the sort of player we need right now
I think those signings were the catalyst for staying up that season. Gave the place a lift. I don't think we've managed 15 wins in a Championship season until 16/17 after that season.
Big Stan was one of my all time favourites - heart as big as a lion and always seemed to really care. May be not the very best but would shine in this era.
Valerian Ismael now 1/20 with sky bet. He’d sort of fit with previous appointments, relatively unknown, Austrian management experience and decent win record. He would certainly cover off diversity too as his Wikipedia entry says his mother was an Alsatian.
I always thought we made an error not signing Raczi. Stan never looked the same player without him. They were a great partnership.
I thought Raczi was the more talented player. But Stan was really well suited to the English game which is probably why the best part of his career was playing with us. I don't think Davey knew how to get the best out of Raczi.
yeah agreed on all counts. But then again I’m one of the few people that sort of enjoyed the football in parts under Davey.
I can remember their first game for us. Immediately before kick off the two Hungarians gave each other a big hug in the centre circle. I thought to myself, this means something to these guys, they have some pride. Not sure how the spreadsheet measures that kind of impact. That's how they played, gave 100%, 100% of the time and a big part in us staying up. I'd take Stan upfront now teamed with Cauley.
I remember that too. I work in Stoke, so I went to the game. It was a freezing cold night in February I think and because it was on Sky there were less than hundred of us in the big away stand - we're talking smaller than a button mushroom freezing. Great win though, got stuck in the car park behind the home stand for ages though after listening to the phone in on Radio Stoke - lots of moaning about losing to teams like Barnsley . Great at work the day after though.
