Because the first one did the trick. Even the WHO are saying that lockdowns don't work and that we shouldn't be doing it. Not to rehash old topics, but if social distancing, face coverings and lockdowns work, why are we seeing increased case numbers? And no, before some smart alec chimes in with "people aren't following the rules" some aren't, but it is a miniscule minority, 99.9% of people I see have masks on and are social distancing... I fully understand that the virus is real, but the measures, restrictions and destruction of our way of life just doesn't tally up IMO.
I don't think there's much argument that lockdowns decrease transmission and infections, the argument is about whether this is worth the collateral damage.
They calculated the peak infection rates occurred 3-4 days before the start of the last lockdown in the UK.
Full lockdown does (although I'm not advocating it) but I'm not sure what we're doing or the Welsh or the Scots or the French does. It's the worst of all options as it's destroying the economy, causing misery and poverty, having a seriously adverse effect on other health issues and entirely failing to prevent the spread of the virus.
My Mrs works at the white bull at cannon hall farm, it’s amazing how many people live in the same household
That’s the thing though, masks don’t stop the spread it helps reduce it, the real key is regular hand washing/cleaning. People tend to think if they have a mask on are they are doing enough.
I don't know where you live but what I am told by family and friends on the internet that that is NOT the case in many places. Only a couple of days ago a friend was ranting on WhatsApp about all the "morons" (her choice of words- not mine) walking and hanging around Barnsley town centre not wearing masks and not social distancing. Same in Mexboro, Doncaster, Scarborough Filey and Whitby (all of which where we have friends saying the same). The media report police responding to thousands of incidente of people having parties and breaking them up. Besides, if, as you claim 99.9% of people ARE social distancing there is absolutely no way the infections are doubling every 9 days as is being reported from the latest study from Imperial college. The virus would simply have no access to sufficient hosts to multiply. People (understandably) ARE scared, tired and depressed (akin to the WW1 myth that prevailed at the start - 'it will all be over by Christmas' that turned into 4 years of attrition). When it started, Health workers were heroesbeing applauded, in Italy we had nightly 'community singing from the balconies, the Italian National anthem blaring out, kids painting rainbows everywhere 'the slogan 'Andra tutto bene' (Everything will be all right) but all that has dissipated and an aire of depression and disillusionment in the governance has descended. Naturally people want to blame someone and that someone is always those who we relied on to 'fix' the problem. The Italian Govt are being blamed, riots and protests against lockdowns in Milan Naples Rome and elsewhere, Macron and the Govt is being blamed in France with similar protests being reported. The Czech Republic, praised for its initial response when it all started for 'getting it right' are now in deep sh*t Belgium given the size of its population are one of the worst hit . US latest figures show a runaway train ( in spite of Trump ludicrously claiming they have 'got it beat' and even worse than India In short ALL Govts, whether or not they 'followed the science' have not found a solution. Nature is winning. How we square the circle between stopping the spread but keeping food on the table for billions of people no-one , not even the experts has the answer to. The simple fact that people on this BB cannot agree the way forward merely emphasise that. I confess to being incredibly lucky where we are, both financially and geographically and favour a draconian short sharp shock lockdown. However, I acknowledge that if I was in a different place reliant on wages with dependents to feed, house and clothe that would be the last thing I would want. One example... Resetting the financial markets to clear National debts i.e. 'investor haircuts' and all that) sounds like a solution - but then what happens to all those Pension funds that people are paying into? The only answer is a working vaccine and that can't come soon enough for me.
That can be said about so many things in the modern World but there is zero chance of it happening unless we have an Apocalypse which would only 'change or way of life' for something far worse. Does anyone think that with humans being human that the survivors of an apocalyptic event would suddenly turn it into an altruistic utopian society? Call me cynical but, sad to say, even given an opportunity to start with a 'clean slate' I think within a couple of decades there would be those living the high life at the expense of the majority merely eking out an existence.
I'm not sure what anyone can realistically expect of places like Whitby. They are popular small, tight, constrained spaces. The notion you can stay further than 2m away from people all the time is flawed. If that makes you feel uncomfortable I'm not sure it's the place to go and spend time. Just to add social distancing guidelines is the key risk is being within 2m of someone for 15 minutes.
That's the thing isn't it you would have to go so harsh to actually stop the spread. And even where they did like Argentina (I believe it was there)it still spread just slowly due to the restrictions. Meaning they have stayed under the crushing restrictions longer.
