AFC Wimbledon play their first game at the new Plough Lane stadium tonight. It's a real shame that their fans who have supported and backed them since they were formed off the back of the despicable decision to move their club to Milton Keynes wont be in the stadium to savour the moment. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54779977 29 years since they left the old Plough Lane stadium to ground share with Palace.
That's a shame that none of their supporters can get to share in this big moment in their history. I feel for them
A mate at work is a fan - says its really weird them not being there for the first game, after being away from Plough Lane so long. If things had been different(us staying up, CV19) I'd be going to our game there!
Respact to those who have worked hard to achieve this. The original decision to allow the move to Milton Keynes remains a stain on the footballing authorities that made it and they are no better these days. Well done and good luck AFC Wimbledon, except against us. I hope to go there and watch the reds play the dons in the not too distant future, ( in the Championship of course )
Would be good if they could become Wimbledon FC again and retain their history including trophies etc (if not already handed back)
Apropos of nothing, this is the second time Doncaster have ended up being the patsy for a club opening their stadium - they were the first away team to play at the Amex, too.
Really chuffed for em, and love the fact Glynn Hodges gets to lead em. Hope Covid doesn't stop our Dave being there.
I’m Absolutely over the moon for them. It’s a crying shame no fans will be there. I Was there on the last game at selhurst. It was one of the worst criminal acts in football allowing a franchise to take place. Be a few tears of joy down that way.
If I remember right there was a fight with Merton council over plans for a new stadium. Who wouldn’t give planning permission. ( the original plough Lane also a speedway and greyhound stadium) They moved to selhurst. Then a franchise was done to create MK dons who took their place. The fans then formed AFC Wimbledon starting in the 6/7th tier. I wish them all the luck in the world. What they achieved as the original Wimbledon is probably the biggest ever achievement ( imho) in football. Roy of the rovers stuff.
thanks HF - the surprising thing is the ground hasn't had factories/housing built on it. All credit to the fans etc for 'resurrecting' Plough Lane.
The new ground is where the dog track used to be just up the road from the old ground. Been to quite a few AFC Wimbledon games in their non league days as I live in Egham and there's some good hard working people there who have done so much to get the club to where they are. Fully deserved and hopefully the future is bright for them. As for that other lot at MK............................
Which I'm sure I read somewhere and as alluded to in the BBC article is where Wimbledon played some of their games prior to moving to Plough Lane so they really have gone back to their origins.
