    One of my favourite actors especially his comedy roles. I spoke to him briefly a few years ago when he was there to cut the ribbon at the reopening of a charity shop in Princes Risborough. He milled about in the shop for some time. Not an ounce of the big star about him, even though he was. He lived quite close by and I had a nice conversation about him with Wendy Craig a month or two later.

    RIP Lionel. Jean will miss you.

    He never played a bad part and he had a prolific tv and film acting career. As Time Goes By was his best work for me.

    I wonder if, like me you get him mixed up with Margot's husband in the Good Life? Very similar character and that actor did pass away a few years ago ........ Paul Eddington?

    Just remembered his cameo in Blackadder Goes Forth when he played Field Marshal “Dougie” Haig. He advised Blackadder to stick pencils up his nostrils to feign insanity
