I watched a programme once about gifted children at sport. I wonder if they did a follow up ever? One Dad had a big bet on his son playing in a major golf open or something.

I was really glad my kids never wanted to pursue expensive hobbies ( dancing could have been but their dance school was very reasonably priced)

Think reason why those two are so popular is they are clearly very talented but are also flawed characters which helps people connect to them.

I know a couple of very successful business men who had their sons doing this, both stopped doing it because they couldn’t afford to compete at the top.
According to them, it’s not too expensive at the beginner stages but once you get through the different levels only the very well backed generally do well.

Agree, if you take Andy Murray as an example, his family (and him) say Jamie was a much more talented player and Andy was a better Footballer than Tennis player, but his competitiveness set him apart.
Don’t get me wrong he clearly has more talent than most people, but it is his commitment and will to win that sets him apart.
Very few people have the ability to do that

I have mixed feelings on the right to vote in country of origin. As the law stands as I see it. The right stands for 15yrs. Once registered leaving. . The Tories are looking to overturn that and make it a lifetime right Believe it was in the last manifesto as I’ve read it. . ( probably a vote catcher if labour don’t have the same policy in mind.)

Do you have the right to vote in your adopted country ?.

Voting on polices that have little effect on a person that’s left the country I don’t feel is right. Although I do understand, financially people like yourself have a vested interest.

what happens with healthcare rights in an adopted country. Are they still a given in some countries ( as I’m led to believe. May be way off the mark on that one) as in prior to Brexit. What has happened regarding that issue. ?

The thing about pensions is not in question for me. You earned it. you keep it.

You cannot vote in the country you are domiciled or tax resident you have to be a citizen. Prior to Brexit we could vote in the European Elections but no longer as far as I am aware. there are numerous reasons why Expats (from any country should retain the right to vote since as citizens of the country where they have financial interest ...pensions etc.... thing like dual taxation treaties , mutual health cover agreements etc could impact severely on them with no say in how they could vote for a different party at election time. wher pensions are indexed linked an opposition party could campaign in the manifesto to remove that for pensioners living abroad. Again, with no voting rights twe could do nothing to voice our concerns As regards the EHIC and the S1 cover the UK are issuing new ones from 2021 to eligible people e.g. students studying abroad , people working abraad and retired p[eople living abroad. This is reciprocal and UK covers UK expats and reimburses in our case the Italian Govt for Healthcare costs. Th Italians do the same for eligible Italians in the UK.

I do agree though that interfering in domestic policy that has no impact on expats abroad should really not be an entitlement but how that could be done I have no idea.
