Hopefully when this covid lockdown business is over or settled down my wife and i were thinking of doing a walk in the Ladybower reservoir area. Anyone done a walk in that area? Is it easy to get to and park up and what levels of walks are there to consider? Any advice greatly appreciated.
From my own experience, you're better off parking up near Derwent reservoir. There is a car park up there but the road up to the car park has lots of parking along it. There is only one road (off the main A road) so you won't get the wrong one. You can then walk down either side of the water down to Ladybower or you can go up around Derwent, which I think is a much nicer walk Have a look on Google maps!
Brian Clough walked ACROSS the water. Geoffrey Boycott walked ACROSS the water. When the pope tried and ended up splashing around Geoff said “Shall we tell him about the steppingstones Brian?” Clough replied “What steppingstones?”
Have you thought of going on the train on the Hope Valley line from Sheffield? There's a fantastic walk from Bamford station, up to Win Hill where there are magnificent views, then along Hope Brink and eventually back down to Hope station for the journey home. Alternatively get the train to Edale, then climb up onto Kinder Scout where there are a multitude of walks. It's a bit of a pull up to the plateau though. Train home from Edale. Thirdly, get the train to Hope and from there climb up onto Lose Hill, then take the Great Ridge to Hollins Cross before descending to Edale for the train home. From Hollins Cross you can also descend to Castleton, but then you'll have no transport. If you want to go by car, drive to the Strines Inn where there's a large car park, then climb up Foulstone Moor to Back Tor on Derwent Edge, a Peak District classic with tremendous views. From the top you can descend to the Derwent valley and the reservoirs, but from there it's a long way back up and over. You can also follow the edge south and watch out for the strange rock formations in awesome scenery. You can either retrace your steps along the edge or make a circular walk, albeit with a bit of road walking. Nearer home there's the classic walk around Langsett Res, parking at Langsett Barn, or further afield up the Cut Gate track to Margery Hill and back. Watch out for the bizarrely named ruin called North America. Have fun!
There’s a 5 mile circular walk starting near the ladybower inn, goes straight up the hill behind the inn. Smashing views of the reservoir from the top and a moorland walk too. Missus and I walked it it a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It’s an AA (auto not alcohol!) walk, well worth a google.
I walk around that are quite regularly , there is parking at Fairholmes by the Derwent res which is handy for walking around the Ladybower as well as the Derwent , if you download a map of the area you can plan a walk to suit you & you will also find signposted routes in that area . On completion of your walk there is a cafe to get refreshment although there are no indoor facilities & there are toilets there
Not my lass, if I suggested we were going away for a weekend and it involved walking, I’d be lucky to be able to walk!!
Done a few of those walks, Margaret Hill, Lose Hill (brilliant views) the ruin is called North America due to the troops who were stationed at Scout Dike (their huts still there) using the ruins for target practise - the bullet holes are still visible.
I did this one and parked at Fairholmes, there also car parks up the road to Fairholmes. 7 miles so not too long, some decent climbs though and cracking views at lost lad.
