Nice not to hear young kids screaming "Scab" yesterday.

And I bet nobody shouted it at home either.
But I did hear someone on the side shout out something like "f.ucking hell fire" on the commentary.

Someone on their forum was saying the same, pointing out that he'd organised collections for the strike whereas the "spotty faced youths" werent even born!

Haha, good point. It does make me cringe with embarrassment.
About 5-6 seasons since, in the away match where Cwyzka scored that screamer, I had our ‘firm’ straight behind me (spotty little mouthy boys basically) giving it the old ‘Scab, scab...’. I asked one if he even knew what it meant and he said ‘Yeah! It’s summat to do wi t’Yorkshire Ripper or summat int it’. Hells bells!!!

Can't stand it. One particular visit to Forest was such a miserable experience I vowed not to go again. It might have been the one referred to above.

It's a nickname that's stook after what most of the Nottingham coal miners did during the strike of 1984 If you represent a community then what happens in that community you get tarred by the same brush. people with rightwing views don't like it.
It's not only Barnsley supporters call them scabs, the Blunts are obsessed by calling them scabs.
I for one hope this nickname Scab will always be associated with Nottingham and then it will never be forgotten. when people ask why do they call them Scabs people will say it's because the Nottingham miners sold their fellow miners down the river.

Cringe all you want tbh but what those bastd notts miners did to our communities from Scotland to Kent was disgraceful .
Easy to cringe when you’re not affected , people still suffering to this day , never forgive never forget .

I get that, but you've got kids and those in their 20s and 30s (who weren't alive during the strikes) shouting scab at a crowd full of people also not alive during the strikes. That's the element that doesn't make sense to me

Football chants to these kids is just that to rile the opposition .

I think fans of English clubs should shout 'Nazi" at all fans of German clubs as well. Makes about as much sense.

Whilst I agree with what notts miners did at the time was nothing short of disgraceful mate, i know even up here it split families and friends, I do think it will eventually die out due to different generations, its like still blaming all Germans for what the nazi did, obviously that’s just my opinion and I wasn’t has hit with it as much as your good self Marlon

I get where you're coming from and have been rather vociferous on the subject over the years. Not least three weeks ago when i was asked to leave a pub having endured 15 minutes of the locals talking absolute ***** about mining communities before finally giving the benefit of my 'views'.

However, i think there is a difference between the actions of those Notts miners who sold out their fellow workers/communities and the end result of the strike. Even if they had come out on strike that dispute would never have been 'won' - not in any circumstance. If the state decides it's going to use all the powers at his disposal then there is no group in society that is going to win a dispute. In this case: GCHQ, MI5, MI6, the Army, the Police and the social security system to make sure you can attack the wives and children of the strikers - then you literally have no chance. Particularly when those bodies do their jobs with 'vigor and enthusiasm'. It why standing up for Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia comes so hard to some of us.

The tragedy of the working Notts miners is they sold other communities down the river and chose to believe the nonsense they were fed by the NCB and the Govt. We've all seen how that worked out for them.

I get that people will look at the kids chanting and think they’re too young etc .
But lots ridiculing the sentiment as if it’s long past and no ones still affected.
No one seems to chastise the notts fans chanting you’ll never work again which the scab chants are in retaliation .
These are chants nothing more nothing less , no ones killed and it did happen .
The Yorkshire ripper chants are the ones I’d be more disgusted at and concentrate on ridiculing .

O disrespect pal but that’s your opinion and in my opinion you’re wrong .
I’m not getting into a line of posts about miners strike but Thatcher was all about done without the Notts Miners and if they had come out we would have had full support from other unions .
We would easily have won that miners strike and most books published acknowledge that .

We'll have to disagree then Marlon. No-one who takes on the State, when they are willing to do what they did in 84-85, wins. No one.
