That can't be genuine... at least I sure hope that it isn't!

If it actually is, which I very much doubt, Peter Shilton has just become the biggest idiot that I've ever seen on twitter. Imagine hating someone so much over one goal and over a game of football for more than thirty years... That's really sad.

The greatest footballer I've seen by a distance (Pele was before my time). As others have suggested, Argentina in 86 were pretty average, and he dragged them through to win it. In 1990, they were garbage, and he got them to the final losing to a penalty.

Yes, he cheated against us by handballing a goal in. But every modern day footballer cheats feigning injury, diving, so I'm not sure that label can be used more against him than anyone else.

Judging him as a footballer. A true genius has just departed.

Second best footballer for me , after Pele but Maradona had sublime skill and the ability and charisma to lift average players around him as at Napoli and Argentina , great player

Indeed. Every footballer (not just modern day footballers) cheats sometimes, some do it more often and some are more obvious than others, but everyone does it in one way or another.

I can understand how English fans at the time must have been really pissed off (not 34 years later though!), but even in that handball goal I can see a bit of genius... I mean, why would anyone even try something like that in a World Cup game in front of the whole world?! Totally outrageous, unfair, but that's what legends are made of. It's still just a game after all!

Brek Shea the most entertaining first half performance I've seen in a Reds shirt.

Maradona was a troubled genius. Over the years "troubled & genius" have gone together many times from Van Goch to Van Morrison or Van Halen for that matter. Salford Van Hire have always been more rational, if a little dull.

On a serious note I'd put him as one of the best 11 post war players in the world. We know he cheated versus England, but as Barnsley fans that happens on a weekly basis by some opponent or official.

RIP, the world would not have been the same without you Diego.

He was a very very fortunate man to have been born with a talent that billions could only dream of but he was an horrible human being. It's hard to admire a man with such low morals and it's hard to mourn his death. I do however feel for his family.

He was a superb footballer that obviously had his demons but he should be remembered for his talent on the pitch before anything else.

I disagree. Should Fred West be remembered for his patio laying skills?

The most influential footballer I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. Pretty much won a World Cup single handedly in 86. Can anyone name another Argentina player from that tournament! His performance in that tournament was the best I’ve seen from any footballer ever.
Can say he’s the best player I’ve ever seen because Football is one of those sports where generally speaking, each generation is better than the last. Looking at my heroes from the early 80’s there’s not one of them that would get into today’s Barnsley side because the game has changed so much.
That makes Messi the best footballer I’ve seen but he has never come within 10% of the influence on the national side that Maradona had.

I disagree with you disagreeing! If we ignored the contribution of people through history because they were corrupt, criminal, bigoted etc.... then we’d be ignoring/discounting a lot of people.

Banned from football for being a drugs cheat
Convicted of trying to shoot people

There's a difference between ignoring someone's achievements and abilities and simply saying that they shouldn't be solely remembered for that ability above all else.
