Search focussed on area between KFC and Birdwell. They have a huge number of volunteers but think the volume of people may have sent the dog into hiding. They have surrounded the exits from where they think he is and are asking people not to shout, approach or take their dogs. They have a dog tracker working with them. They hope to get the owners into the area so that he can pick up their scent, but he bolts every time he sees anyone. The other possibility is to try and direct him towards his home in Tankersley via the bridge at the C0ck Inn. That obviously involves a dangerous trip over Sheffield Rd. Doubtful, nobody is getting anywhere near him. Plus he may not have eaten for days now so may be dangerous in his state.
Are missing dogs so rare these days that one dog has been getting such big attention and actual search parties out looking? I assumed that somewhere in Barnsley one or two dogs went missing every day.
Does it matter? Nobody has been frogmarched down to look. If people want to help, then let them help. A lot of people with free time on their hands at the moment. No harm being done.
It was a genuine question. I assumed dogs regularly went missing, I was asking if it was actually quite rare.
A huge proportion of missing dogs are stolen. Therefore difficult to trace. Aside from that the main time and reason for dogs to go missing is November and January due to fireworks. In this instance people have become involved because there have been so many reported sightings, in various different villages, and naturally people felt they could help. As of this afternoon the owners have requested all volunteers to back off, and refrain from searching for him. The dog tracking team have a good idea of his wherabouts and need calm to enable the dog to scent his owners.
It is, I was just surprised because so many people caring suggests it's rare, if they were used to a dog going missing regularly I'd have thought that apart from a few most people would be apathetic towards it but that's not the case here so I thought it must be rare.
Never really thought about that. I know dogs hate fireworks but I never realised they run off (makes sense though). As a side note where the hell do you find a dog tracking team?
I've told this one before, but in brief... Years ago my border collie Jimmy got spooked by fireworks and disappeared. This was at my girlfriend's house at Barnetby le wold, other side of Brigg. That night and all the following day, Saturday, we searched and searched. Nothing. Back at my house in Epworth, about 20 miles away, I had a message on my phone to say he'd been in a garden in Brigg about 5 miles from Barnetby but they were unable to hold on to him before he ran off. Sunday morning, 2am, woken by girlfriend who shouted "he's back". Very hot and dusty he'd made his way back from Brigg to her house and he was standing at the front door. He'd come back across fields and lanes he barely knew. Overjoyed cannot describe it. We had prayed and prayed for that little man to come home. Tears shed by the bucket load. Fireworks ... not for me.
I was referring more to the scale of the search. Hope the dog is found alive. Unfortunately I don't think Maddie ever was going to be.
