If anyone's interested, came across this on YouTube, a 3 part series on CPU's & their advancement,
very interesting if your into your technology. A three part series well worth a watch, a look into the massive strives we've made over the last few decades. Imagine what it will be like 20years from now, that's if we ever shake this chuffin C-19 off

Also bare in mind this was made a couple of years back.

mad innit. now apple are making their own chips, I struggle to see anyone keeping up. even ryzen, who have had a huge start, have almost been caught up with the very first M1 desktop soc.

Quantum CPU's are the future, I did see an Apple video, keep meaning to watch it but keep forgetting.

Can someone put it into layman's terms please, what is it going to enable us to do that we can't do now?

It's the rise of the machines, as Arnie said in Terminator (1/2/3 etc) "Hasta la Vista baby".

    Serious reply....

Computers will basically run far faster and Automatic Intelligence development will accelerate. The possibilities don't really bear thinking about.

Edit, computers have been writing their own software for some time, this will get more sophisticated and they will sort of evolve on their own. As Kate Bush said "I hope somebody can hit the switch".....

I think the best way to look at is Helen is go back 20yrs and compare it to today.

I'm 32 and fairly computer literate, I can use them but certainly not program them etc. I have to say, the stat near the beginning where it said something along the lines of "this old CPU could process 46 odd thousand instructions per second, but the intel one can do 80 billion a second", which blew my mind!

How is it possible to do 80 billion ANYTHING in a second!?

"How is it possible to do 80 billion ANYTHING in a second!?"

Sperm and length of time taken to coax.
Just ask my wife. "Was that it?"

AI will probably destroy mankind in the end. It will probably be too late to stop once it becomes conscious. Probably the best for the Earth all told.

Marc, don't confuse silicon (element that CPUs use) with silica which is a major part of sand, and glass etc.

“Quantum CPU’s are the future”? I thought it was garlic bread.
The greater processing power means they (quantum computers, not garlic bread) can be used for AI on things like self driving cars, unbreakable bank security, improving aircraft aerodynamics to make them more efficient, improving agriculture and energy usage, machine learning, solving problems which now appear unsolvable for climate control or cures for diseases and viruses. Someone with more knowledge of the subject than I have might care to comment but I suppose if you think about how much processing power there is in a car today compared to 20 years ago; you still drive it but the car does a lot of the work without you realising, quantum computing will affect everything from the food you eat to the building you live in.

Anyone familiar with the sit com Silicon Valley? If you aren't then it's well worth a watch. They basically say AI will destroy everything in the end. The ability for machines to learn is quite scary - they only see the logical aspect of a situation not the impact a decision may have.

I suppose the film War Games kind of looked at this when Joshua thought the US was under attack - he eventually realised their wasn't a winning solution to a nuclear war. Computers have come a long way though since that

    I preferred Windows 3.1.
Actually, I like the DOS command line, reminds me of OpenVMS DCL command line.
I absolutely love UNIX command line to bits.
